Knoxville Museum of Art: Unveiling of Renovated Family Creative Space
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Free event and Kids, family
The Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) is thrilled to announce the reopening of its newly renovated, hands-on creative space which will include the debut of commissioned artworks by Knoxville-based artists, a new name and signage, a scavenger hunt, as well as new interactive art-making activities. The space formerly known as Creative Corner will now be named “Aubrey Jaye’s Art Play,” in honor of Aubrey Jaye Burleson and the transformative support of her parents Melissa and Randy Burleson. The Burlesons have been long-time supporters of the KMA in a variety of ways, and were motivated to offer a family-friendly space to museum-goers that cultivates and inspires the creative energy of children, as well as all those young-at-heart. Aubrey Jaye’s Art Play encourages young visitors and their families to make art while surrounded by art – offering both traditional media (drawing & painting) as well as custom-designed digital tablets loaded with a plethora of possibilities.
Aubrey Jaye’s Art Play is conveniently located next to the museum's front desk, making it a perfect first stop – or finale – for visitors. This colorful, engaging space encourages children to channel their inherent artistic talents into masterpieces that can speak to what they see and feel in the Museum. While children immerse themselves in play and exploration, guardians are encouraged to join in on the fun, making it a dynamic destination for visitors of all ages.
The renovation, which began in October 2024, is a collaborative project featuring the work of five esteemed local artists: Denise Stewart-Sanabria, Carl Gombert, Jean Hess, Paris Woodhull, and Annie Rochelle. The artists toured the space individually and collectively, to ultimately create a harmonious environment where their individual styles merge into something magical beyond the sum of its parts. In addition to its installations and warm new design, Aubrey Jaye’s Art Play will feature state-of-the-art technology developed by Protozone Interactives.
Aubrey Jaye’s Art Play is set to reopen on Sunday, February 9, 2025, in conjunction with the museum’s regularly scheduled Second Sunday Art Activity. Families in the Knoxville community are warmly invited to visit, explore, and enjoy this creative space with their children.
Located at 1050 World’s Fair Park Drive in downtown Knoxville, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday (10:00 AM–5:00 PM) and Sunday (1:00–5:00 PM). Admission and parking are free. Learn more at www.knoxart.org.

Knoxville History Project: The Story of Knoxville College with Dasha Lundy
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
Tuesday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Maple Hall, 414 S. Gay Street
At Maple Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 11, our KHP board member Dasha Lundy will tell some of the complicated story of Knoxville College, the historically Black college founded here in 1875 that has dwindled in recent decades, emptying most of its old hilltop buildings, but never given up the ghost. (It recently lost one of its largest old buildings, Elnathan Hall, to fire.) Lundy, a former Knox County Commissioner who has a doctorate in physical therapy, has made a sideline of local history, especially that of Knoxville College, of which she’s a former board member.
Free program. Food and drinks available for purchase.

UTK Department of Classics: Shopping for Artists’ Materials in Ancient Rome
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
Lecture - "Shopping for Artists’ Materials in Ancient Rome: Pigment shops, pigments, and product choice"
Tuesday, February 11, 2025 6pm
AIA/East Tennessee Society and McClung Museum are pleased to present the next program in the 52nd Annual Series, 2024-2025. The lecture will feature Hilary Becker, Associate Professor of Classical Studies, Binghamton University. This is the UTK Department of Classics Haines-Morris and AIA’s Robert J. Braidwood Lecture.
Lecture Summary: The discovery of the only known pigment shop in ancient Rome revealed an array of colors in their raw, mineral form waiting to be sold to wall painters. Ancient pigments provide a surprising opportunity to understand how science can be used in archaeology, revealing what pigments were present in the shop and, potentially, the source from which they originated, as well as exploring the supply-side economy of Roman painting and the steps by which these pigments went from the mine, to a shop, to the walls of a Roman house. This lecture also explores the economy of the Roman pigment trade, looking at the prices of pigments as well as the potential for their adulteration.

Clarence Brown Theatre: Inherit the Wind
Category: Theatre
BY JEROME LAWRENCE AND ROBERT E. LEE
Feel the heat of the courtroom in the sizzling American classic 'Inherit the Wind', an explosive drama inspired by the most important trial of the 20th Century, the Scopes Monkey Trial, on its 100th anniversary. As a media circus descends on a small Tennessee town, two of the nation’s most powerful lawyers go head-to-head in the ultimate battle of wits, wills, and the political and religious divide that could be ripped directly from today’s headlines. In a fresh production boldly reimagined for today, the fast-paced drama explores religion, intellectual freedom and the relationship between social norms and law.
