“Lincoln’s Loyal Mountaineers: East Tennessee and the Union Political Strategy†A Brown Bag Lecture by Dr. Aaron Astor
Category: History, heritage and Lecture, panel
As part of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Brown Bag Lecture Series, Dr. Aaron Astor will present “Lincoln’s Loyal Mountaineers: East Tennessee and the Union Political Strategy†at noon, Wednesday, November 30, 2011, in the auditorium of the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 South Gay Street.
When East Tennesseans resoundingly rejected secession in the June 8, 1861, statewide referendum, President Lincoln made it a priority to defend and protect the "loyal mountaineers" of the region. Viewing secession as a planter conspiracy that conned ordinary Southern whites into support for the Confederacy, Lincoln cultivated alliances with prominent East Tennessee Unionists, such as Andrew Johnson, Horace Maynard, and William "Parson" Brownlow. In his presentation, Dr. Astor will examine Lincoln's mistaken belief that the majority of the white South supported the Union alongside East Tennessee and why this consequently caused Northern public opinion to shift in favor of the more radical Republicans who demanded thoroughgoing change in the South--including emancipation and eventually Radical Reconstruction.
The lecture is a part of the series of book discussions and brown bag lectures accompanying the feature exhibition “Why Does Lincoln Matter?†at the Museum of History through January 13, 2012 and co-sponsored by the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Knox County Public Library. Admission to the Lincoln exhibit and also the museum’s “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee†is free during the run of the Lincoln exhibit.
The Brown Bag Lecture series is sponsored by 21st Mortgage. The lecture is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring a lunch. Drinks will be available.
The Museum of East Tennessee History is operated by the East Tennessee Historical Society and is located in the East Tennessee History Center at 601 South Gay Street in downtown Knoxville across from the Tennessee Theatre. Museum of East TN History: Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War
Category: History, heritage
Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War examines how President Lincoln used the Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the Civil War - the secession of Southern states, slavery, and wartime civil liberties. The exhibition is composed of informative panels featuring photographic reproductions of original documents including a draft of Lincoln's first inaugural speech, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Thirteenth Amendment. Most importantly the exhibit helps visitors understand why Lincoln's struggle with the Constitution still matters today.
