The Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association presents their 48th annual production of Tchaikovsky's “The Nutcracker” featuring the UT Chamber Orchestra and Sound Company, Too! on Saturday, November 19 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, November 20 at 2:30 pm, with a one-act Encore performance designed for small children on Saturday, November 19 at 11:00 am.

All performances are at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are Adults $20, Seniors $15, Students $10, all Encore seats are $7. Tickets are available online at www.orcba.org, ORNL Federal Credit Union - Main Branch only, or at the door.

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center will host its second annual Holiday Homecoming with free admission for all on this date. The event, designed especially for families, is made possible through an Arts Build Communities grant from the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, in cooperation with the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Center experience includes the movie “Peace of Ground” and self-guided tours of two galleries and 12 historic outbuildings, as well as a traveling exhibit on the Civil War, on loan from the Tennessee State Museum. In addition, the following musical groups are scheduled to perform in the indoor auditorium (times subject to change): 10:00 AM, Smoky Mountain Flute Circle; 12:00 PM, The Woodpickers; 1:00 PM, the Rejoice Women’s Choir from Maryville; 2:00 PM, The Spurgeon Boys; and 3:00 PM, Mountain Shadow String Band (The Pair Family).

Children will have the opportunity to make popcorn balls, handkerchief dolls and pine cone turkeys throughout the day, up until 4:00 PM. Historic demonstrations are scheduled from 10 AM – 3 PM and include: Becky Weaver, basket making; David Weaver, apple cider making; Iva Wilde and Connie Keeble, open hearth cooking; Neiland Hale, woodcarving; Lisa Free, spinning and weaving; and beekeeping by the Blount County Beekeepers Association. Special guest Bill Landry, from the award-winning television series “The Heartland Series,” will discuss his new book “Appalachian Tales and Heartland Adventures,” beginning about 4:00 PM, in the auditorium. Immediately following his presentation, Mr. Landry will sign autographs and talk with visitors in the Heritage Center’s main gallery.

The Pregame Showcase is a free lecture series two hours before kickoff in the University Center Ballroom (Room 213) on home game days, featuring 45-minute presentations by award-winning teachers of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Michael Knight, Professor in the Department of English, speaks on "The Typist: An Author's Translation of History Into Fiction."

The Pregame Showcase is free and open to the public. Complimentary light refreshments are provided, and members of the audience who register are eligible for door prize drawings at the end of each presentation and discount coupons for purchases from the University Center Bookstore.

Noisy Nights! at AMSE returns from 5:30 - 8:00 pm when Pistol Creek Catch of the Day offers up Americana, rockabilly and eclectic music for all ages at the free admission, family friendly, third Saturday evening monthly event at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge. Named after a major creek that runs through the City of Maryille, Pistol Creek Catch of the Day is a four person musical ensemble based in Maryville. The band's musical influences are Carl Perkins, Elvis, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, the Beetles, Beyonce, Bobby Darin and Beethoven. With these Pistol Creek Catch of the Day sounds, museum goers will be clapping their hands and doing some toe tapping during Noisy Nights! at AMSE. Since the band started in 2005, Pistol Creek Catch of the Day members from Maryville are Bill Cabage on guitar and fiddle, Edward Harper on guitar and drums (as needed), and Carl Gombert on bass, tenor banjo and an assortment of exotic percussion instruments; however, at AMSE he will play bass. They all contribute to the vocals. Scott Hinds, a versatile musician from west Knoxville completes the foursome, although he is unavailable to perform at AMSE.

Cherokee cooking is an often overlooked local cuisine that few people get an opportunity to taste or learn about. Many of the old recipes and traditional ways of preparing the various wild foods have been slowly dying.
That was until Johnnie Sue Myers; Johnnie Sue is a Cherokee Elder who has a passion for preserving and protecting other Native American culinary heritage. As a result of this desire, she has published her first cookbook; “The Gathering Place: Traditional Cherokee Dishes & Southern Appalachian Cooking.”

Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, TN, will be hosting an afternoon book signing and tasting for Johnnie Sue on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.

November 18, 2011 (Knoxville, TN) ? The Knoxville Museum of Art Education Gallery features Ritta Elementary School through January 29, 2012.

Students in grades K-5 from the East Tennessee region, under instruction of their art teachers, created artworks around different themes, personal expressions and classroom lessons. The students at Ritta Elementary studied Vincent Van Gogh, Self-Portraits with Crazy Hair, and Color Wheels.

The KMA recognizes the creative efforts of these talented young students, and the invaluable opportunities made possible for them by their dedicated teachers, Bobby Mooring and Lori Sloan.

KMA's Education Gallery promotes the fundamental importance of the arts in the school curricula, and the essential component to the healthy development and complete education of young people.

The museum is located in downtown Knoxville at 1050 World?s Fair Park and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 10 am?5 pm, and Sunday 1 pm-5 pm. Admission and parking are free.
