On June 23 and 24, visitors at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, Tenn., will experience the same sights, sounds, tastes and smells British Lt. Henry Timberlake experienced when he first discovered the region some 250 years ago. Dozens of craftsmen and demonstrators will be on hand recreating everything Timberlake documented on his first visit.

At Sequoyah, living history demonstrations will include: a Cherokee stickball game; finger weaving; stamped pottery; river cane basket weaving; 18th century demonstrators in wardrobe; the Warriors of AniKituhwa, a Cherokee dance group; flute and storytelling; guns and diplomacy; moccasin making; a blowgun competition; and authentic Cherokee food.
Re-enactor Travis Henline will portray Timberlake; Bullet Standingdeer will portray the Cherokee Ostenaco; and Little Hawk will portray interpreter John McCormick.

At Fort Loudoun, there will be guided tours of the Little Tennessee Valley, lectures about Timberlake’s visit and demonstrations of 18th century map-making techniques.
Certified Cherokee guides provided by The Museum of the Cherokee Indian will lead the tours from Fort Loudoun to historic sites at Toqua, Ballplay, Tanasi and Chota, following the footsteps Timberlake himself described in his memoirs. Tours will leave six times a day each day at a cost of $5. The lectures and map-making demonstrations will also be both days at Fort Loudoun but they will be free.

The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and Fort Loudoun State Historic Area are located less than a mile apart on Highway 360 in Vonore, Tenn. This program was funded in part with a grant from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation.

Cherokee Heritage Day, an annual event, in which visitors are invited to "re-live a day in the life of Knoxville founder James White, the pioneer settlers and the Cherokee." Costumed interpreters will re-enact the Treaty of the Holston and the day will include traditional Cherokee dances, demonstrations of pioneer life, etc.
This festival earned an Award of Distinction from the East TN Historical Society this year.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase along with a variety of American Indian crafts.
The date is Saturday, June 23, 10 am to 3:30 pm. Admission is free.

Two of Knoxville’s nationally renowned non-profit organizations, WDVX Radio and Ijams Nature Center, have joined forces again to host the Meadow Lark Music Festival – In Tune With Nature.

The 2012 lineup includes the widely popular newgrass folk-rock pioneers Acoustic Syndicate, renowned for their original material that conveys a positive message of conservation, sustainability, and happiness. The festival lineup also features Mary Gauthier with Tania Elizabeth, The New Familiars, Sam Quinn and Japan Ten, Ganasita, and other locally popular bands in a full day of performances in the meadow of Ijams Nature Center. The Meadow Lark music festival will include art and craft vendors, children’s activities, educational displays, and food vendors. Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair, but leave dogs and coolers at home. Tickets will be available the day of the show for $25 and in advance for $20 at www.brownpapertickets.com.

Located three miles from downtown Knoxville, Ijams Nature Center is a 275-acre wildlife sanctuary and environmental learning center providing outdoor connections and experiences through education, conservation, and recreation. Boogertown Gap is Ruth Barber and Keith Watson, a wife/husband duo and sometimes band, currently residing in Pittman Center, TN, where they perform Old-Time Mountain and Celtic Music throughout East Tennessee and the local "Great Smokies" area.

Americana singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen has built a reputation as one of the nation’s finest musical storytellers. Knox County Public Library’s Teen Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing. Over a thousand teens are gunning for the goal of reading five books by July 31. Teens who complete the reading challenge will receive a Rewards Book worth $100 that includes admission to area attractions, food, and other treats as well as a chance to win one of three ereaders. To encourage participation, the Library is hosting The Hunger Games Tribute Bash at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 23 at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street.

Teens and 'tweens are invited to try their hand at The Hunger Games survival challenges, sample foods from across Panem, create crafts from the Districts, and enter the Reaping for door prizes.

Knoxville Zoo offers one of only three chances to experience the zoo’s Close Encounters of the Wild Kind program this summer. Close Encounters of the Wild Kind gives visitors the chance to take an intimate behind-the-scenes tour and meet some high profile residents at Knoxville Zoo. Visitors can go off the beaten path to meet giraffes, penguins, or giant Aldabra tortoises during these special encounters. They also have the opportunity to touch or feed their new animal friend, talk with their keepers to learn about them and take a souvenir photo of their personal introduction. This Saturday, June 23rd, as well as Saturday, July 28th, and Saturday, September 1st, three different animal encounters will be offered; Giraffe Gatherings, where visitors can offer Jumbe, Lucille and Patches a leafy treat at 11:00 a.m., the Penguin Party which includes
a special appearance by Gypsy or Jello penguin at 1:00 p.m. and Tortoise Time, an encounter with loveable giant Aldabra tortoises Al, Stand-Up and Patches at 2:30 p.m.
Reservations are required for Close Encounters of the Wild Kind and can be scheduled by calling the zoo’s ticket office at (865) 637-5331, extension 361 or at the zoo’s ticket window upon arrival to the zoo. Each Close Encounter session is $20 per person, or $50 per person for all three encounters and reservations for each session are limited. Advanced reservations are highly recommended. General admission to Knoxville Zoo is not included in the price of each Close Encounter ticket.

Whether it's a brilliant idea on an old napkin, a beautiful hand-rendered sketch, or a delightfully intricate model, this exhibition will unearth and present the hidden artifacts of the art behind design. It's a rarity that an audience can formally experience the creative intimacy behind Nashville's most influential architects and interior designers.

The exhibition will highlight intriguing blueprints, sketches, photographs, models and various other fine art works by leading architects and designers. These are the ideas and outlets that amount to the aesthetic growth of our city and communities.

This will be Alfred Williams & Company's 5th quarterly, charitable art and design exhibition. 100% of donations and fine art proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Nashville, who's volunteers provide free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of low-income Americans. Many of Nashville's flood victims have received significant help from this organization. Let's support them with a $5 suggested donation at the door.

Joining the festivities is Nashville's first mobile boutique, The Trunk as well as The Grilled Cheeserie. 10% of proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Nashville.

1888. Tuscumbia, Alabama. Kate Keller needs some help. Her daughter Helen is deaf and blind… and a complete terror! She is wild and rambunctious, and everyone in the house has spoiled her rotten. She is becoming a danger to herself and everyone
around her. Help arrives in the unlikely form of 20-year-old Annie Sullivan, herself once blind, having grown up in the asylums of the North, and determined to teach Helen language. When Captain Keller puts a two-week deadline on Annie’s teaching, she must work a miracle if she is to change the hearts and minds of the Kellers and delve into the darkness and silence which entraps young Helen. The Miracle Worker is a play bustling with life, humor, thrills, and an inspirational miracle you won’t soon forget.
