UT Downtown Gallery: “The Legacy of Reverend James Randolph Denton”

5208.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

“The Legacy of Reverend James Randolph Denton” Curated by Beauvais Lyons, Director of the Hokes Archives.

Exhibition & Performance at the UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay Street
Friday September 7, 2012, 5-9pm, Saturday September 8, 2012, 10am-3pm.
“The Legacy of Reverend James Randolph Denton” presents a display on behalf of The Association for Creative Zoology, a nearly century-old organization advocating for creation science. Dressed as a preacher from the early 20th century, exhibition “curator” Beauvais Lyons will be present throughout the exhibit reenacting Reverend Denton’s “inspired message about the mystery and wonder of God’s creation” as part of his public education campaign in the 1920s.

Despite the historic appearance of the exhibition, the kiosk, the many meticulously drawn lithographs of rare and unusual hybrid animals, the fossil “evidence” and the taxidermy “specimens,” the presentation is a complete invention. Like other projects from the Hokes (pronounced “hoax”) Archives, the exhibition is an elaborate work of academic fiction. Beauvais Lyons is a Chancellor’s Professor in the UT Knoxville School of Art where he has taught printmaking since 1985.

“The Legacy of Reverend James Randolph Denton” is intended to explore perceptions of belief and truth, art and science, history and biography and to foster public discourse about competing theories of creation and evolution. Some of the work in his exhibition has been presented at the John Scopes Trial Festival in Dayton, Tennessee and at the Museum of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

CMI - Huge Art Sale

CMI (formally "Rechenbach's") located next door to Jerry's Artarama in Bearden is having their "Hoopla" sale. It happens only once a year, it is a wholesale art framing business, and the general public come in and buy. You will have to pay tax of course, unless you have a resale business license. So, artists, if you do your own matting and/or framing, this is a great opportunity to get these materials at very inexpensive prices (these are discontinued items, but incredible deals). Regular stock items will be available for sale too, which the general public is not entitled to during the rest of the year. There will be food and drink too, so you can start out the First Friday with a little shopping.
