David Underwood: Open to Interpretation Exhibit

This exhibition is Underwood’s 24th solo exhibition. His composite photographs and artworks in other various media are included in the permanent collections of a dozen museums, including The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The California Museum of Photography, The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, and the Knoxville Museum of Art. His work has also been included in more than 90 group exhibitions, many of which were juried national or international competitions.

Bill Snyder and Freddie Brabson will play selections on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. Guest MC for the program will be Kelly Vasconcelos. A boxed lunch may be purchased in the lobby for $5.00 (while supplies last). In addition, several snacks may be purchased at the concession stand such as soft drinks, bottled water, popcorn, candy. There is no charge for the program.

While it may be debateable whether Thelonious Monk would have made a great President, it's clearly not the best idea to hold a concert in his honor on a Presidential election night. Were the KJO more partisan, perhaps we would have noticed this conflict sooner. Nonetheless, when we polled our season ticket holders, they favored moving the date by a margin of more than 2 to 1. In response, we've decided to reschedule the date to Monday, November 5.

The style he created may have been unorthodox, but boy did it ever swing! In this special concert, we delve into all-things-Thelonious with pianist-extraordinaire Eric Reed, one of the shining lights in the jazz world today. Reed is no stranger to Monk’s music. He’s been involved with numerous celebrations of the famed composer’s work including two albums of his own, and as pianist of choice with Wynton Marsalis on the acclaimed recording Marsalis Plays Monk.

The Athens Area Council for the Arts’ 33rd Big Time/Small Town Season of Performances features world famous performers and some from our own (regional) back yard. All four shows will be held at Athens City Middle School, 200 Keith Lane, Athens, Tennessee at 7:30 PM.

The season begins on Monday, November 5th with An Evening with Judy Collins. Noted for her eclectic tastes in recorded material, including folk, show tunes, pop and standards, Judy Collins is a multiple Grammy award winner and Academy Award nominee. All seats for this concert are $30.00 in advance and at the door.

Dave Eggar refuses to be pinned down to one genre. This classically trained cellist, who debuted at Carnegie Hall at age 15 and graduated from Harvard University and the Julliard School's Doctoral Program, has performed with Joss Stone, Renee Fleming, Sting, The Who and many others on huge stages worldwide. On Tennessee Shines, he’ll perform with fellow NYC resident Amber Rubarth. Amber, who won Mountain Stage’s New Song Contest, does her own fair share of collaborations.

In a voice halfway between Johnny Cash and Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Ronny Elliott sings songs as dark, wry, honest and delightfully strange as the characters who populate them. The Tampa-based singer-songwriter has been at this music thing for a long time; he’s toured with Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley; played bills with Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Wilco, Pete Seeger, the Allman Brothers and, as he puts it, “too many more to remember or mention.” On Tennessee Shines, he’ll team up with singer-songwriter Rebekah Pulley to perform songs from his latest CD, I’ve Been Meaning To Write. http://www.ronnyelliott.com/
Bristol native Susan O’Dell Underwood is one of three poets and one musician (Dawn Coppock, Kory Wells and Kelsey Wells, respectively) who make up Tennessee Joltwagon. Her poem “Holler,” based on Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” received an overwhelming response at the group’s performance on the WDVX Blue Plate Special in February. In her spare time, she is director of creative writing at Carson-Newman College.

Tickets are $10, available in advance at BrownPaperTickets.com and sold at the door on the night of the show. Doors of the visitor center open at 6:15 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 7 p.m.

The East Tennessee Historical Society and the Tennessee State Museum are pleased to announce that the Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission’s official traveling exhibition, Common People in Uncommon Times, will be on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through January 13, 2013.

This pictorial narrative represents a diverse array of personalities--Confederate soldiers, Union sympathizers, African-Americans, gallant women-- whose sagas illustrate a land divided. The saga of personal struggle and endurance during the Civil War is presented on 10 graphic panels taken from the State Museum’s collection of photographs and artifacts from the era, as well as from other collections across the state. Each panel portrays a different theme: Confederate leaders, Union leaders, African-Americans, civilian home front, common soldiers, war on the water, reconstruction and commemoration.

The exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil Will and is accompanied by a tie-in exhibit, In Death Not Divided: Civil War Tombstones and the Stories They Tell, organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society.

From bridge burners to hangings, heroes to villains, grand monuments to simple stones, In Death Not Divided: Civil War Tombstones and the Stories They Tell is an intensely personal look at East Tennessee's Civil War experience.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present two new exhibitions of paintings by local artists Marcia Goldenstein and Jean Hess in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 2 – December 2, 2012. Goldenstein’s exhibition, entitled “Collection/Re-Collection”, is an installation project that transformed the results of her father’s decades-long extensive collection of stone tools and other artifacts into paint. Hess’s exhibition, entitled “Place”, is a series of collage paintings addressing various issues related to a sense of location in the universe, ranging from memory and reflection to orientation to fear and uncertainty.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by Nick DeFord entitled “Alleged Posthumous Writings”, opening Friday, November 2, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Nick DeFord is an artist and educator from Knoxville. He received his MFA from Arizona State University and his BFA from the University of Tennessee. His work has been exhibited nationally, with recent exhibitions at the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts in New Jersey. His work has also appeared recently in Elephant Magazine and Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities. He has previously taught at both Arizona State University and the University of Tennessee and recently became the Program Manager for Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of drawings and sculptures by local artists Sally Ham Govan and Bill Cook, Jr. entitled “Drawn and Carved”. Govan’s charcoal pencil, pastel, and digital works will be displayed with Cook’s marble sculptures at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 2-30, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Sally Ham Govan has an MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford and a BFA in drawing and graphic design from the University of Tennessee. She currently designs and edits websites and publications at Middle Tennessee State University.

As one of six children, Bill Cook, Jr. grew up in the foothills of East Tennessee. As a young child, he took up wood carving with a pocket knife and could often be found creating small carvings from the plentiful cedar wood on the family farm. He attended the University of Tennessee and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1995. It was there that he discovered sculpting in clay and in the late 1990s, he started to use marble as a sculptural medium.

UT Downtown Gallery will behosting during the month of Novemeber, the exhibition: BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
The artists in “Based on a True Story” use narrative in their work in a variety of ways.

Chris Miner`s videos include autobiographical fragments, ruminative monologues, family history, dramatic events, and sometimes allegorical or iconic elements.

Matthew Garrison`s videos also complicate the issue of the real and the fictional, combining, for example documentary footage from the Iraq war with sequences from D.W. Griffiths films.

Yeon Jin Kim makes scroll drawings hundreds of feet long and builds models and sets out of common household materials, which she then films to make narrative videos.

Please join us for a reception and meet these artists, Friday night November 2 from 5:00pm until 9:00pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
