The new Arts in the Airport exhibition officially opens to the public on Wednesday, November 7, with a reception starting at 5:00 PM in front of the ticket counters (just inside the Departures entrance, upper ramp). Best of Show and other awards will also be announced at 5:00 PM.

Please park in short-term parking, and bring your parking ticket with you to get it validated. The airport staff will take up to 25 people at a time through security to view the exhibition. You do have to pass through the security checkpoint.

The Latin American Student Organization and the Cultural Attractions Committee, a committee of the Central Program Council, which is a student-led organization advised by the Office of Student Activities, Division of Student Life, invites you to attend Pacifico Dance Company Wednesday, November 7th at the Tennessee Theatre at 7:30 PM.

Based out of southern California, Pacifico Dance Company strives to preserve and celebrate traditional Mexican dance in order to educate its audience members on cultural diversity. Colorful costumes and mariachi music highlight the company’s talented dancers, and they intertwine their dancing with Mexican folklore and religion in order to give audience members a holistic understanding of Mexican culture.

In addition to its spectacular shows, Pacifico Dance Company passionately pursues youth outreach programs that aim to instill a sense of pride and ownership of its culture all the while educating young people.

This event is $5 for UT students, $20 for faculty and staff, and $25 for the general public. Tickets may be purchased online at www.KnoxvilleTickets.com. UT students, faculty, and staff may purchase tickets at the Central Ticket Office in the University Center or at the ticket office in Thompson-Boling Arena. The Athens Area Council for the Arts announces this year’s annual juried art competition and exhibit, “The Art of Still Life”, to be held at The Arts Center, 320 North White Street, Athens, Tennessee, from November 6, 2012 – January 4, 2013. Over $1200.00 in prize money will be awarded in three divisions – high school, college, and open. Residents of McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Polk, and Bradley counties have been invited to participate by entering artworks.

The goal of this juried art show is to encourage artists to stretch the limits of what we consider a ‘still life’, defined as the depiction of a grouping of inanimate objects. While the still life has been a key subject for many artists in all eras, this tradition remains fresh and relevant as each succeeding generation seeks new interpretations of the form.

The Art of Still Life opening reception and awards ceremony will be held at The Arts Center on November 13, 2012. Hosted by the Community Artists’ League, the reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. to allow for viewing of the entries and voting on the People’s Choice Award. Light refreshments will be served. The awards ceremony will begin 7:00 p.m. The public, artists, family, and friends are invited to attend.

For art and photography students, there is perhaps no better place to be immersed in studies than Italy or Austria, birthplace of many artists. Students participating in the summer 2012 TnCIS study abroad programs did just that, and we are pleased to exhibit selected drawings, sketchbooks, and photographs from their travels.

For art and culture enthusiasts, “Paper Trail” is an exhibit at Pellissippi State Community College that offers attendees the chance to experience cities such as Vienna and Rome through the eyes of student artists.

Slated for Nov. 6-23, “Paper Trail” features drawings, photos and sketchbooks created by Pellissippi State students who studied abroad in Austria and Italy during the summer 2012 Tennessee Consortium for International Studies programs. The collection explores landscapes, people, food, and cultures the students encountered while studying photography, drawing, art history, and economics.

“Paper Trail” is one of the events that make up Pellissippi State’s new arts series, The Arts at Pellissippi State. The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures and the fine arts.

An opening reception is scheduled for Nov. 8, 3-5 p.m. Regular exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The showing is in the gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

David Underwood: Open to Interpretation Exhibit

This exhibition is Underwood’s 24th solo exhibition. His composite photographs and artworks in other various media are included in the permanent collections of a dozen museums, including The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The California Museum of Photography, The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, and the Knoxville Museum of Art. His work has also been included in more than 90 group exhibitions, many of which were juried national or international competitions.

The East Tennessee Historical Society and the Tennessee State Museum are pleased to announce that the Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission’s official traveling exhibition, Common People in Uncommon Times, will be on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through January 13, 2013.

This pictorial narrative represents a diverse array of personalities--Confederate soldiers, Union sympathizers, African-Americans, gallant women-- whose sagas illustrate a land divided. The saga of personal struggle and endurance during the Civil War is presented on 10 graphic panels taken from the State Museum’s collection of photographs and artifacts from the era, as well as from other collections across the state. Each panel portrays a different theme: Confederate leaders, Union leaders, African-Americans, civilian home front, common soldiers, war on the water, reconstruction and commemoration.

The exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil Will and is accompanied by a tie-in exhibit, In Death Not Divided: Civil War Tombstones and the Stories They Tell, organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society.

From bridge burners to hangings, heroes to villains, grand monuments to simple stones, In Death Not Divided: Civil War Tombstones and the Stories They Tell is an intensely personal look at East Tennessee's Civil War experience.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present two new exhibitions of paintings by local artists Marcia Goldenstein and Jean Hess in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 2 – December 2, 2012. Goldenstein’s exhibition, entitled “Collection/Re-Collection”, is an installation project that transformed the results of her father’s decades-long extensive collection of stone tools and other artifacts into paint. Hess’s exhibition, entitled “Place”, is a series of collage paintings addressing various issues related to a sense of location in the universe, ranging from memory and reflection to orientation to fear and uncertainty.

The exhibition of recent works by Marcia Goldenstein and Jean Hess will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from November 2 – December 2, 2012. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by Nick DeFord entitled “Alleged Posthumous Writings”, opening Friday, November 2, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Nick DeFord is an artist and educator from Knoxville. He received his MFA from Arizona State University and his BFA from the University of Tennessee. His work has been exhibited nationally, with recent exhibitions at the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts in New Jersey. His work has also appeared recently in Elephant Magazine and Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities. He has previously taught at both Arizona State University and the University of Tennessee and recently became the Program Manager for Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
