The Maryville College Theatre Department Presents "Sylvia" by A.R. Gurney

Set in New York in the 1990s, A. R. Gurney’s play about a man and his dog has been a staple of the American theatre since its premiere.Middle-aged, upper-middle class Greg finds Sylvia, a dog played by a human, in the park and takes a liking to her. He brings her back to the home he shares with Kate, his wife. When Kate gets home, she reacts very negatively to Sylvia and wants her gone. They eventually decide that Sylvia will stay for a few days before they decide whether she can stay longer, but Greg and Sylvia have already bonded. The resulting tension between Kate and Sylvia puts a strain on Greg and Kate’s marriage as he becomes more and more infatuated with his canine companion.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for Seniors, Maryville College Alumni and area students. Maryville College faculty and staff are free but a ticket is needed for admission.

Us Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre: Carolina Chocolate Drops with The Two Gentlemen Band

Carolina Chocolate Drops with The Two Man Gentlemen Band
Friday, December 7, 8 p.m.

When Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons met at the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, NC, they had no idea that they would eventually be touring the country together, joined with multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins, as the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Armed with their newest effort, 2012’s Leaving Eden, the group is selling-out shows across the US and Europe. They’ve made a reputation for themselves by combining traditional string-band sound with contemporary flare, evident in covers like "Hit ’Em Upstyle" as well as some unlikely choices in instruments.

For a rootsy revival that’ll torch your shorts hit up the U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre on Friday, December 7!
