In 2009 Troy Adkins, a member of First Apostolic Church, was taking his three year old son Tanner to the church’s daycare (Apostolic Kiddie Academy) when they were hit head-on by another vehicle. Troy died in that crash and Tanner suffered multiple life-threatening injuries. Amy, Tanner’s mother, was surrounded by her family, friends, and praying church family. After months of extensive surgeries, tubes and braces, and arduous rehabilitation in Knoxville and at the Shriners’ Hospital in Chicago, Tanner (now four) was ready to return to his daycare. All were amazed and thankful for his recovery and his quick adaptability to living life in a wheelchair.

The AKA/ACS current playground lacked the necessary play structures and ground cover to accommodate a child in a wheelchair. The Lord laid a burden for a handicap-accessible playground on the hearts of Tanner’s family. Tanner’s great-aunt (and teacher at Apostolic Christian School) Sandy Rhyne and grandmother (and teacher at AKA) Denna Loop went to Bishop Billy McCool and Pastor Mark McCool about building an ADA-approved playground.

Although FAC was deeply involved in fund-raising for a new church sanctuary, Bishop McCool and Pastor McCool designated the offering on Mother’s Day 2012 for the new playground. A generous offering was received, but it wasn’t enough to fund the expensive requirements for mobility-challenged children. On the following Sunday, Bro. Mike Mencer (Tanner’s maternal grandfather) stood and testified about his love and friendship for Troy. He reminded the congregation about Troy’s love and devotion to the children of FAC, AKA, and ACS. Bro. Mike urged the congregation, “Troy always worked with your kids, now let’s not forget his kid.” He ended his testimony with a challenge to the FAC congregation to raise the necessary funds and he would match them by $50,000. The saints of God heeded the call of the Holy Ghost and responded to the challenge. Over $137,000 was given and the playground was built for all the FAC/AKA/ACS children to enjoy.

On Mother’s Day 2013, this playground will be dedicated to and celebrated by all the family, friends, and church/school family of Tanner. Among the guests attending the dedication will be one of Tanner’s classmates who is also wheelchair- bound. After visiting the school and church facilities and learning of the inclusive playground that was being built, Ethan Roach’s parents enrolled him in ACS for first grade. Today, all children who attend FAC/AKA/ACS can enjoy playtime on the brand-new, interactive, ADA-compliant playground.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is famous as an international destination for all manner of aspiring artists and craftspersons—students seeking exposure, guidance, or simply practice at media ranging from jewelry-making to glass-fusing. The public tends to be less aware that Arrowmont’s historic campus is also a powerful attraction for a large, diverse and enormously talented family of instructors. For professional artists, instruction at Arrowmont offers an opportunity to ply their livelihood, certainly. But they also have the chance to demonstrate, discuss and refine their techniques in modern studios where lively conversation and exchange of knowledge enrich the entire group. For teaching academics, Arrowmont provides incentive to winnow away at a semester’s worth of teaching and determine what is essential and possible for a weeklong workshop. Both students and instructors say it’s common to cover more than a semester’s worth of collegiate art education during the span of one Arrowmont workshop.

Stefanie Gerber Darr joined Arrowmont as Gallery Director in April, following work at prestigious institutions in Denver and Nashville. “Every summer Arrowmont invites over one hundred artist instructors to share their talents and teach classes to students from all over the country,” says Darr. “They are conduits of creativity that help make Arrowmont an educational, expressive, and inspiring force in the world of arts and crafts. Dubbed “A lively ‘nun-stop’ musical,” by the New York Times, “Nunsense” concerns the comic misadventures of five nuns—ballet-loving Sister Leo, street-wise Sister Robert Anne, befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia, the Mother Superior Sister Regina, and mistress of the novices Sister Mary Hubert— who try valiantly and with much hilarity to stage a talent show to raise some emergency funds for their convent.

Once a month, the PCAC gallery exhibit changes, so monthly visits are advantageous for viewing quality artwork, including watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastels, colored pencil, photography, mixed media, and 3-D work, including pottery, sculpture, and jewelry. The gallery is also a perfect place to shop for one-of-a-kind decorations or gifts at reasonable prices. PCAC visitors not only enjoy the latest gallery exhibit, they also learn about the many art classes and day trips offered by the Art Guild. In addition, visitors often get to see a class in progress or watch the open painting, beading, or figure drawing sessions taking place in the art studio.

Opening First Friday, May 3, 2 Many Pixels photo gallery is proud to present a collection of photographs by young artist Jake Wheeler. The work (more than 40 large format images) depicts urban decay and the distress of individuals coping with adversity. The images are mounted on reclaimed plywood, emphasizing a sense of deterioration. The photographs are all for sale, gallery archival prints, signed and numbered by the artists.

The Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture is pleased to announce our Annual BFA Honors Exhibition. Graduating seniors in the School of Art and the College of Architecture and Design are honored each year when selected by committee as the top students among their peers. This exhibition will feature work from students in ceramics, painting and drawing, design, architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. There will be a First Friday opening reception on May 3 from 3-5pm in the Ewing Gallery.
