Louisiana Zydeco

Troy Carrier grew up in Church Point and Lawtell, Louisiana and learned his music playing with his father Roy Carrier and his brother Chubby. He later played with C.J. Chenier’s Red Hot Louisiana Band. Today he has his own zydeco dance band, Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe, and they have been pleasing dance crowds from Maine to Florida. Dikki Du sings lead and plays accordion, joined by Neal Carrier on scrub board, Raymand Randall on guitar, Paul Newmanon bass and Greg Gordon on drums. Their most recent CD is Straighten It Out.

East Tennessee's fanciest cake competition is just around the corner. Knox County Public Library is showcasing the creativity and imagination of area bakers with the help of a little flour, butter, and sugar. The 6th Annual Great Cake Bake to benefit Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County is set for 12 - 5 p.m. on February 28 in the Tennessee Terrace at UT's Neyland Stadium. All bakers and cake makers are invited to participate.

NEW THIS YEAR: Top division winners will receive fabulous new prizes! Top winners in the fondant category have the chance to win a year's supply of products from Satin Ice (a $500 value!). Top winners in the Junior and Teen Divisions will win passes to local area attractions. All winners will receive prize packs from Food Network and/or Sugarbakers.

Also new this year, the event is separating the Junior's category into two new categories: Junior (Under 12) and Teen (13-18).

A DIAPER CAKE DIVISION. Handcrafted cakes made of diapers have become a popular centerpiece for baby showers everywhere. The Great Cake Bake offers a Diaper Cake division for creative artists who want to contribute to the cause but aren't so handy with fondant or buttercream. Individuals or groups and organizations may enter a themed diaper cake to be judged and auctioned off to benefit Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County.

The Great Cake Bake is designed to highlight the regions’ best cake decorating skills in a public exhibit. It's a sweet way to support the Imagination Library program—making sure Knox County children will continue to get free books in the mail, every month, until age 5.

Participants can enter in one of five divisions: Junior (under 12), Teen (age 13-18), Beginner, Intermediate, or Professional; and can bake in one of three categories: All Occasion Cakes, Wedding Cakes, or a single brilliantly decorated cupcake. The decorated cakes will be separated into different groups: buttercream frosting only and fondant/gum paste/mixed sugar art. There’s a place for every cake!

To enter online go to www.knoxlib.org/cakebake and fill out an easy registration form. Each entry costs $15, which is the cost of sponsoring one child in Imagination Library for a year. The deadline for registration is February 22. Paper forms can also be downloaded from the Knox County Public Library’s website or picked up at Sugarbakers Cake, Candy & Wedding Supplies (514 Merchants Road).

Winners in each category and division will also receive a trophy or ribbon and bragging rights for an entire year! The public will vote on their favorite cake to find a People's Choice Winner.

Annual Tennessee Cello Workshop (TCW)
Intensive, joyful exploration of many facets of cello playing, through master classes, technique seminars, lectures, ensemble playing, concerts, and competitions. Historic Ramsey House at 2614 Thorn Grove Pike in Knoxville will be introducing to the public, for the first time, the results of the paranormal investigation by Haunted Knoxville Ghost Tour’s J-Adam Smith and captured on video by Patrick Watson of Mapletree Productions.

In this award winning presentation you will see the long awaited results that may put to rest all the speculation as to whether Historic Ramsey House is haunted.

The half hour video documents the investigation along with the history of the home and family. There will then be a half hour tour led by J-Adam Smith discussing the details of paranormal investigating. We think you will find this as exciting and fascinating as we did.

This fundraiser will start with a VIP session at 5:30pm. It will include a brief history of Ramsey House and the Ramsey family. J-Adam Smith along with Lindsey Whatley will be presenting Ghost Hunting 101. You will learn the ins and outs of the Ghost Hunting business, the equipment used and how to interpret the results. You will view the film and tour the house with the Ghost Hunting team. Admission for the VIP session is $35 and includes a copy of the DVD for you to take home. The number of guests for this tour is limited.

Admission for the additional tours is $25 per person to include a viewing of the film in the Visitor’s Center and a tour of the home with J-Adam. All proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to Historic Ramsey House so that our mission of preservation, education and interpretation of the historic home and one of the founding family’s that took such a great leadership role in the development of Knoxville as we know it today.

This energetic musical follows Tom, a young school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music.
Memorable songs such as “Just A Bill,” “Interplanet Janet,” “Interjections” and “Conjunction Junction” bring his lesson plans vividly to life.

between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win.

The Tennessee Children’s Dance Ensemble (The Dance Ensemble) opens its 34th annual touring season on February 27 & 28 at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. This year's exciting season opener includes performances by Ensemble alumnae Kelly Arsenault, world swing dance champion, and Karlie Budge, who was chosen to work with Nationally acclaimed New York choreographer Mark Morris. Also featured will be a new dance, "Northstar" by alumna Rebecca Serrell Cyr, winner of New York City's coveted 2014 Bessie award for outstanding performance. as well as "Disrupted," a haunting display of tribal rhythms by Randy Duncan, former director of the Joseph Holmes Dance Company in Chicago. Performances will take place Friday and Saturday evening at 8:00pm, with an additional matinee performance at 2:30pm on Saturday. Tickets are $26.00 and may be obtained by calling 865-584-9636.

Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) will present The Friendship Quilt Exhibit, featuring the work of The Merry Crow Hop Quilters, at the Vonore Community Center February 26-28, 10 a.m-6 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public. There will be an opening reception and a chance to meet some of the artists Thursday, February 26, 5:30 - 7 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by Cutting Edge Builders, Inc.

Over a period of 35 years, The Merry Crow Hop Quilters have collaborated to produce a remarkable collection of quilts, each one distinctive and every square as unique as the individuals for whom they were made. Every quilt commemorates the milestones of life, including births and birthdays. Healing quilts have been made to comfort friends facing illness or injury. Approximately 26 of these creations will be featured in the exhibit.

The quilts feature the handiwork of Pamela Madden, Heather Houvenagle, Dona Van Asdale, Valerie Carmley, Jasmine Madden, Elida Houvenagle, Anita McClure, Ginny Smiley, Eda Ciemania, Olivia Kane, Mary Hendershot, Eileen Totten, Kathy Hampton, Lynda Best, Tilda Madden, Julie Guthrie, Kathy Hartley, Jill Alliman, Dianne Chapman, and many others.

What: The Town of Farragut Arts Council will sponsor the 2015 Farragut Intermediate School Art Show this winter at the Farragut Town Hall. Don't miss this opportunity to marvel at the work of some of Farragut's most talented young artists. Awards will be given for best in show and first, second and third places during a reception on Tuesday, March 3.

Competition is jurored by Phong Bui (Fine Arts), DJ Trischler (Graphic Design), and Dr. Jana Emmer (Art History).

Bui and Trischler will be lecturing at UT as part of their time here.
DJ Trischler will lecture Monday, February 16 at 6:30 PM in room 109 of the Art + Architecture building. DJ Trischler is a Cincinnati-based designer. He is a graduate of La Roche College in Pittsburgh, PA. After graduation, he served as a junior designer at Widgets and Stone in Chattanooga, and then as the AIGA events and programming director for the Chattanooga chapter. He was one of 4 designers who developed Chatype, a typeface for the City of Chattanooga, TN, the first of its kind. in 2014, DJ decided to start his own independent design practice. Clients have included the Hunter Museum and the Chattanooga Public Library.

Phong Bui will lecture Tuesday, February 17 at 7:30 Pm in room 109
Phong Bui is an artist and the co-founder, editor and publisher of the monthly journal The Brooklyn Rail and The Brooklyn Rail/ Black Square Editions press, as well as the host/producer of Off the Rail on Art International Radio. From 2007 to 2009 he was a curatorial advisor at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center/Museum of Modern Art, and is currently a member of the Artists Advisory Committee of the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and the International Association of Art Critics, United States Section (AICA/USA). As a visual artist, his numerous installations have won the Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Eric Isenbeurger Annual Prize for Installation from the National Academy Museum (2003).
