Knoxville Writers' Guild: Shannon Burke

Novelist and screenwriter Shannon Burke will read from his newest book, "Into the Savage Country," at the March program of the Knoxville Writers' Guild.
The event, which will be open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 5 at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Streets (in Fort Sanders). A $2 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible. Additional parking is available at Redeemer Church of Knoxville, 1642 Highland Ave.
"Into the Savage Country" is a historical adventure novel that mostly takes place on a trapping brigade in the 1820s. The novel begins as the protagonist - a young man named William Wyeth - starts west on a trapping brigade. The character makes friends, falls in love, chases buffalos and becomes involved in a struggle where the future of the country hangs in the balance.
Burke's previous novels were well-received and have been translated into several languages. "Safelight" (Random House 2005) was on the Kirkus and Publishers Weekly end of the year lists. "Black Flies" (Soft Skull Press 2008) was on numerous end of the year lists, was a New York Times Notable Book, a finalist for the Believer Book Award, on the Impac Dublin Literary Award Long List and runner up for the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière. He has worked on various films, including work on the script for the film "Syriana."

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center: Little River Trading Company "Pint Night"

Greg Rowe, Little River Trading Company / CYCOLOGY - Maryville, announced that they will be hosting a "Pint Night" fundraiser to benefit the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend, Tennessee. The "Pint Night" event is a fun way for our company to help worthy not for profit organizations continue their missions.
The "Pint Night" will be held at Little River Trading Company located at 2408 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway in Maryville from 5 pm to 9 pm and all proceeds will benefit the GSM Heritage Center.
Greg Rowe explained that Little River Trading Company / CYCOLOGY have partnered with Patagonia and New Belgium Brewing Company to make this fundraiser possible. Greg also thanked the Guild of the GSM Heritage Center for their help in planning, promoting and staffing the event.

MACA Presents Tribute to the Great Girl Singers

Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) will present Jaimee Paul in At Last:
A Tribute to the Great Girl Singers at Hiwassee College in Madisonville. The performance is sponsored by People's Bank of East Tennessee.
Imagine a 1940's jazz club with the voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney, and others. Jaimee Paul and her Jazz combo, led by husband Leif Shires, on trumpet, delivers just that. "At Last", a tribute to that wonderful era and those fabulous female vocalists of that time, will take the audience back to the glory days of yesteryear.
Paul is a Nashville recoding artist with six albums. Her album Hymns of Prayer was nominated for a 2013 Dove Award. She has toured with Kelly Clarkson, Wynona Judd, and Jim Brickman.

We are honored to offer only the fifth performance of a work written by Knoxville composer, John Purifoy, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Roane Choral Society will be joined by members of the Knoxville Choral Society and other choirs, as well as the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, in presenting this stirring piece. This concert will also feature a special performance by our incomparable pianist, Slade Trammell.

Art Market Gallery: "Mapping the Mississippi" exhibition

The Southern Graphic Council International Printmaking Conference is March 18-21. The Art Market Gallery is exhibiting "Mapping the Mississippi", one of 15 Southern Graphic Council portfolio exchanges that will be on display. Exhibition dates are March 3-29. There is a night walk on Thursday March 19 and the Art Market Gallery will be open 5:30-9:00 PM for visitors on this evening. Refreshments will be served.
Owned and operated by 62 professional regional artists, the Art Market Gallery, at 422 South Gay St., is a few doors from Mast General Store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; and 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday.
