Foothills Community Players: Miss Firecracker Contest

  • March 19, 2015 — March 22, 2015

Category: Theatre

Miss Firecracker Contest by Beth Henley is a comedy set in the small Mississippi town of Brookhaven, a few days before the Fourth of July. Carnelle Scott (known locally as "Miss Hot Tamale") is rehearsing furiously for the Miss Firecracker Contest — hoping that a victory will salvage her tarnished reputation and allow her to leave town in a blaze of glory. The unexpected arrival of her cousin Elain, a former Miss Firecracker winner, (who has walked out on her rich but boring husband and her two small children) complicates matters a bit, as does the repeated threat of Elain's eccentric brother, Delmount, (recently released from a mental institution) to sell the family homestead and decamp for New Orleans. But, aided by a touchingly awkward seamstress named Popeye (who is hopelessly smitten by Delmount) and several other cheerfully nutty characters, Carnelle perseveres — leading to a denouement of unparalleled hilarity, compassion and moving lyricism as all concerned finally escape their unhappy pasts and turn hopefully toward what must surely be a better future. Will be presented at the Clayton Center for the Arts. Details TBA.

The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade: Basic Bead Weaving Technique

10118.jpg

Category: Classes, workshops

Learn basic bead weaving technique with Linda Farber.
3/10/15: PEYOTE BASICS 101 - Learn the most basic bead weaving stitch (even-count peyote) while at the same time creating a pretty peyote strap bracelet. This class comes as a result of many requests to get back to the BASICS of bead weaving. Peyote is a beautiful stitch that results in a smooth tapestry finish with the feel of fine silk. There will be a project kit fee of $7.00, payable at the time of class.

3/17/15: PEYOTE BASICS 102 - Students will add to their new skill by creating a piece with a pattern. This requires learning to read a peyote chart or graph. However, our instructor has simplified the whole "chart reading" process. We'll be using a pattern to create a guardian angel tapestry pendant during this session. There will be a project kit fee of $12.00 payable to the instructor at the time of the class.

3/24/15 - PEYOTE BASICS 103: We’ll use this 3rd peyote basics session to learn how to decrease, add a tassel, and create a peyote strap to finish up our guardian angel tapestry. We’ll also add the clasp to our Basics 101 peyote strap bracelet. By the time you’ve finished these three sessions you’ll be ready to tackle any even-count peyote project. There will be no additional kit fees.

You are encouraged to take all three classes. However, if you can’t make both the 101 and 102 basics, chose one or the other and finish up your piece at the Basics 103 class on 3/24.
