Ramsey House: Celebrating Statehood Day

June 1, 2015 marks the 219th anniversary of Tennessee’s admission as the 16th state in the union. East Tennessee’s most important cultural heritage sites are partnering to celebrate Statehood Day on Saturdays, May 23, May 30, and June 6 as well as Sundays, May 24 and May 31. The sites include places of historical significance in the exciting journey from the creation of our country to the founding of our state. The Historic Homes of Knoxville include: Blount Mansion, Crescent Bend, James White’s Fort, Mabry-Hazen House, Marble Springs, Ramsey House, and Historic Westwood. Each site will have individual ways of celebrating the birth of Tennessee. This is a free museum day to the public.

Ramsey House was built in 1797 by Knoxville's first builder, Thomas Hope, for Francis Alexander Ramsey, one of Knoxville’s first settlers. In celebration of Statehood Day, Ramsey House will host Vintage Baseball on May 30 and June 6. This year Historic Ramsey House will be hosting two Knoxville teams: the Knoxville Holstons and Emmett Machinists. Come and enjoy a day of history and fun for all ages. There is no admission charge for the games. Food and beverages will be available for purchase and all proceeds will benefit Ramsey House.

Tennessee Theatre: Ira Glass

Ira Glass is the host and creator of the public radio program This American Life. The show premiered on Chicago's public radio station WBEZ in 1995 and is now heard on more than 500 public radio stations each week by over 1.7 million listeners. Most weeks, the podcast of the program is the most popular podcast in America. The show also airs each week on the CBC in Canada, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's radio network, and on BBC Radio 4 Extra in the UK. Glass began his career as an intern at National Public Radio's network headquarters in Washington, DC in 1978, when he was 19 years old. Over the years, he worked on nearly every NPR network news program and held virtually every production job in NPR's Washington headquarters. He has been a tape cutter, newscast writer, desk assistant, editor, and producer. He has filled in as host of Talk of the Nation and Weekend All Things Considered.

The Retropolitan Craft Fair is a hand selected indie-craft marketplace featuring the South East’s finest talents in contemporary craft and design while also incorporating upcycled goods with a funky, vintage inspired, and fabulously quirky vibe. Our fair brings creators out of their studios to celebrate all things artsy, crafted, and most importantly retropolitan. Each vendor is chosen exclusively after a juried event. They are then curated based on one-of-a-kind products, creativity, and retropolitan swagger.

James White's Fort: Herbs Workshop

Join us for a hands-on workshop with Jim Buckenmyer. Herbs were essential to frontier life. During this hands on working workshop we will cover how to chose the right herbs for your garden, designing the garden for maximum growth and appeal, building the optimal garden, how to best maintain that garden and how to harvest and prepare your herbs for use. When the workshop is over we will have actually built a beautiful herb garden. There will also be plants for you to take home with you so you can start your own garden. Jim is a longtime participant in the reenacting community with immense knowledge in late-18th and early-19th century culture.
The cost is $25 per person, with money raised going toward educational programming at James White’s Fort. Space is limited to 20 people, so reserve yours now! Historic Ramsey House: Vintage Baseball

Historic Ramsey House is hosting its second season of Vintage Baseball. All teams are in period uniforms and play by 1864 periods rules. There is no admission to the games. Hotdogs, popcorn, peanuts and beverages will be available for purchase. To make it a complete “back-in-time” experience you can ride to the game with players just as they traveled to their games, by train. You can catch your ride at the Three Rivers Rambler Depot in University Commons and be entertained by some of the players as they share history and stories of their favorite pass time. Sundress Academy for the Arts: Fiction Writing Retreat

The Sundress Academy for the Arts, a branch of Sundress Publications, is thrilled to announce its summer Fiction Writing Retreat, which will be held from Friday, May 29th to Sunday, May 31st, 2015. The three-day, two-night camping retreat will be held on SAFTA’s own Firefly Farms in Knoxville, Tennessee and focus on fiction writing, with break-out sessions on writing dystopian literature and historical fiction.
A weekend pass includes instruction, writing supplies, food, drink, transportation to and from the airport, and all on-site amenities for $200, with tents, sleeping bags, and other camping equipment available to rent. Payment plans are available!
The event will be open to all writers of all backgrounds and provide an opportunity to work with many talented and published fiction writers from around the country, including Dr. Meagan Cass and Amy Sayre Baptista.

The Rose Center: Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising is the story of a wealthy Mexican girl whose privileged existence is shattered when tragedy strikes, and she and her mother must flee to California. Forced to work in a migrant labor camp, Esperanza must learn to rise above her difficult circumstances and discover what she's truly made of. Set in the turbulent 1930's, and based on the popular book by Pam Muñoz Ryan, Esperanza Rising is a poetic tale of a young girl's triumph over adversity.
