Discover Life in America Bioblitz
Category: Free event, Kids, family and Science, nature
July 11, 2015- Whites Creek Small Wild Area (Tennessee)
What is a Bioblitz?
A BioBlitz is a short (usually one-day), intense team effort to discover as many different life forms as possible in one location. Teams of volunteer scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to find and identify as many species of plants, animals, microbes, fungi, and other organisms as they can. Discover Life in America (DLIA) has partnered with Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) along with regional scientists to host these two Bioblitz events with a focus on plants, birds and butterflies.
Why do we have BioBlitz?
BioBlitzes are designed to increase the public's awareness of the variety of life in their immediate neighborhood and the services these various species provide to improve the quality of their lives. We usually hear the word "biodiversity" in regard to rainforests, with their vast number of species. Yet the diversity of life in our own backyards is phenomenal. BioBlitzes also help to:
- Engage students in community geography and citizen science
- Identify species that should be monitored and controlled
- Make recommendations towards public land management and conservation
- Generate data
- Highlight the positive impact of parks and open spaces on our lives
- And celebrate diversity with DLIA!
9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday, July 11 – It’s totally FREE and we invite everyone (no experience necessary) to join us to celebrate the importance of biodiversity formally through the BioBlitz! Registration required. Call 865-430-4756 or e-mail heather@dlia.org
DLIA’s mission is to discover and understand America’s species through science and education for conservation. DLIA’s flagship project, the ATBI, is a joint effort with the National Park System to identify and record every single species within the Park. To date, DLIA has added an astonishing 8,095 new species to the park’s records, and an even more astonishing 951 species new to science.

Knox Heritage: Preservation Network - Historic Plumbing Repairs & Improvements
Category: Classes, workshops, Free event and History, heritage
Knox Heritage presents the next installment of its monthly series Preservation Network on Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m. This month the focus in on plumbing systems in historic homes. Preservation Network is held at Historic Westwood, 3425 Kingston Pike. Parking is at Laurel Church of Christ, 3457 Kingston Pike. It is free and open to the public.
Preservation Network’s July session features owner and president of Engert Plumbing & Heating, Inc., Donna Johnston and operations manager of Engert Plumbing & Heating, Inc., Dean Thomas. Many plumbers say old house plumbing repairs and improvements often present challenges not found in newer homes. Most problems stem from age and no longer used plumbing materials, such as galvanized steel water supply lines, cast-iron drain pipes and clay sewer lines. Johnston and Thomas will discuss common plumbing issues that challenge the historic home owner and share tips on how to repair and improve your plumbing in your historic home.
Engert Plumbing and Heating Inc., has served Knoxville, and its surrounding areas, since it was founded in 1891. Founded by Fritz Engert, the son of a German immigrant, the tradition of being a family-owned, Knoxville business continues to the present time through the leadership of present owner, James G. Johnston Jr. In 1955, Frank R. Engert purchased the 1849 Samuel McCammon home on Riverside Drive and the company moved to that location from Gay Street. The company remains in that location today.
With such a long business history in Knoxville, Engert has been privileged to be involved in many of the buildings built in the city and community. Through the years, Engert has had the opportunity to actually build the original buildings, and then be involved in the remodeling of those buildings. One such instance is the Miller's Building. Engert was involved in the construction of the original building in 1905, installing the air-conditioning, which gave it the distinction of being the first building to have air-conditioning in Knoxville. Later Engert remodeled and updated the system during the 1999 restoration of the building.
Preservation Network is a series of free workshops held once every month on the second Saturday. Many people have dubbed it the “support group for owners of old homes,” and in many ways this is true. In a relaxed round-table setting, the workshops presents guest speakers who are specialists in windows, flooring, roofing, stained glass, tile, plumbing, electrical, and more. Other guest speakers include those in real estate sales or appraisals, or city codes and zoning officials discussing historic overlays and building requirements.
Knox Heritage advocates for the preservation of places and structures with historic or cultural significance. The nonprofit organization was founded in 1974 and now serves the entire 16-county Knoxville region. For more information, visit www.knoxheritage.org.
