Sundress Academy for the Arts: Writing Booze: A Workshop and Cocktail Class

Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is proud to present this workshop taught by visiting writer, Sam Slaughter. There’s no doubt about the connection between alcohol and literature. Any number of books and studies (The Trip to Echo Spring, for example) discuss these connections. This workshop will begin a dialogue with participants in a two-fold manner. First, they will use texts from famous authors (Ernest Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, among others) to examine how they write about and discuss alcohol in the context of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Participants will then use this knowledge and apply it to in-class writing on similar topics. Each hour will culminate with the construction of a classic literary cocktail, which will then fuel the writing for the next hour. This workshop runs from 4:00 to 7:00PM, and the ticket price of $45 includes instruction, booze, as well as a dinner served post-workshop. Sam Slaughter is the spirits writer for The Manual and also the author of When You Cross That Line, God in Neon (Fall 2015), and Dogs (January 2016). His work has appeared in a variety of other places including McSweeney's Internet Tendency and Midwestern Gothic. He's worked as a winery intern, craft bartender, and helped start a brewery among other service industry jobs. He once drank whiskey out of a muskrat skull. He believes firmly that Bloody Marys should be consumed on Sundays, and he frequently brings his own mini bottles of bourbon on flights. Rose Center: The Hobbit the Musical

  • July 23, 2015 — July 26, 2015

Category: Music and Theatre

Rose Center Presents Their First Outdoor Production: The Hobbit the Musical! Join the area's most talented youth as they lead you through Middle Earth!

This enchanting musical begins with a song by the greatest of all witches: Gandalf (Rachel Bass). And as she sings, we hear the spirited marching song of the dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (David Keck), who pour down the hills surrounding the theater and onto the stage, singing bravely as they come. The reluctant Hobbit hero Bilbo Baggins (Carson Grimes) is asked to join the band, for they can hardly hope to succeed as an unlucky thirteen. Bilbo finally agrees to the adventure! They encounter the dangerous trolls (Brooke Boring, Lindsey Talley, Dean Griffey), then escape into Goblin country where Bilbo finds a gold ring with magical power protected by the infamous Gollum (Britney Newman). Bilbo is cautious and thoughtful but saves them in every crisis, even in the climactic scene with the dragon Smaug (Brooke Boring).

The Hobbit the Musical marks Summer Player's 24th annual summer production. Join us at the Cherokee Park Amphitheatre, July 23-25th at 6PM and July 25 & 26th at 2PM. Cost of admission is only $7 per guest.  Bring your own fold-up chairs or blankets for the performance! Directed by Nathan McGhee. Stage Managed by Candace Moore. Musical Directors are Dean Griffey and Lauren Holt.  Choreographed by Sophia Cardone. Special thanks to Hamblen County, United Away, Tennessee Arts Commission, WCRK, and the Knoxville Children’s Theatre.
