The Dave Rawlings Machine consists of flat-picking legend Dave Rawlings, long-time musical partner and singer/songwriter Gillian Welch, and former Old Crow Medicine Show guitarist, Willie Watson. Jubilee Community Arts and the Epworth Old Harp Singers host our annual Thanksgiving get together. A potluck supper will be followed by a community singing from the New Harp of Columbia. Shape note singing has a long history in East Tennessee and the Epworth Old Harp Singers are actively carrying on that tradition. The New Harp of Columbia was first published in 1863 in Knoxville, based on the 1848 Harp of Columbia, also published in East Tennessee; a comprehensive edition restoring all omitted songs was published in 2001 thanks to the tireless efforts of singer Larry Olszewski. This month, nine local teams of architects, engineers, construction companies and other organizations will construct massive holiday-themed art sculptures made of canned food items – all to help fight hunger in the region.

For the third year, Messer Construction Co. is presenting the “Holiday Canstruction” art exhibition, which will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. The sculptures will be on display Nov. 21-Dec. 3 at the Knoxville Convention Center. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

On Nov. 20, the teams will gather at the Knoxville Convention Center for an eight-hour build of their holiday-themed sculptures. Each Canstruction sculpture typically uses between 1,500 and 5,500 canned food items, with only one-quarter-inch plywood or Plexiglas between the rows of cans and one-quarter-inch cardboard tubing for support. The color of the sculptures is determined by the colors of the cans and labels.
After the exhibition, the sculptures will be dismantled and the canned foods donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. Last year’s event contributed 19,000 items to Second Harvest, and organizers expect the donation to surpass that mark this year.
The Holiday Canstruction art exhibition will be open to the public Nov. 21-Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with expanded hours during East Tennessee Children’s Hospital’s Fantasy of Trees event, Nov. 25-29.

Arrowmont is exhibiting new works by Pamela Winegard in the Geoffrey A. Wolpert Gallery. An opening reception will be held Thursday, November 12th, from 5-7pm. Admission is free and the community is encouraged to attend with their friends and family.

Altering Landscapes showcases mixed media works investigating visual narratives between community and place. The exhibit speaks to past and present cultural, historical, social and political identities.

Pamela Winegard is a working artist and art educator. She received her MFA in art and design from Winthrop University in 2011. Pam is a frequent lecturer and visiting artist at institutions across the country. She is currently featured in Studio Visit Magazine and has been selected to be a member of the National Association of Women Artists in New York City. Pam is a retired professor of Wingate University, Mitchell College, Central Piedmont Community College, Winthrop University and Art Institute of Charlotte. Inspired by place and process, Pinkney Herbert’s work is a spirited exploration in color and line derived from the sights, sounds, and energies of the two principal cities – Memphis and New York – in which this body of work was created. Graffiti-like gestures scrawl atop digital prints, which are collaged and integrated into his paintings. Herbert draws inspiration from art historical and vernacular sources — including patterns, street signs, advertisements, and architecture. In this 30-year survey, we follow Pinkney Herbert on his transformative journey from the narrative into abstraction.
