Calendar of Events

With the holidays approaching, the Arts & Culture Alliance has coordinated the presentation of more than 125 unique works of art by local artists via its online shop so that patrons and the general public may purchase work.

The Holiday Sale, featuring 43 local artists, includes visual arts media (ranging from acrylic to photography), sculptural works, fiber works, glass, jewelry, and more, as well as ornaments, commissions of portraits, and musical performances. Artists will receive 100% of the proceeds after credit card processing fees.

“Our artists are always trying new ways to interpret the world around them, so we are excited to try new ways for them to share that new work,” says Liza Zenni, Executive Director of the Arts & Culture Alliance. “These days, so many art buyers are increasingly going online to discover and add to their collection of local artwork, and we wanted to help them find it. And if they happen to also find a one-of-a-kind holiday gift, so much the better!”

All artworks are available for sale at www.knoxalliance.store and may be purchased 24/7 using a credit card. Work may also be purchased by calling the Alliance, Monday-Friday 9 AM – 5 PM, at (865) 523-7543.

Knoxville Freedom Songs and Stories chronicles the history of the local black community beginning in the post Civil War era. The song/story collection, researched & compiled by Tomi Robb, narrates the old layout of the town and the population movement that created the Knoxville we know today. It recounts the proud stories of prominent figures of the times, and features songs which local musicians were creating to express their response to the world around them, a world where post-war steps forward were met with Jim Crow steps backward. These are stories of celebration and stories of lament. These are stories of Knoxville.

The WordPlayers is a 501(c)3 company of Christian theatre artists based in Knoxville, TN. Knoxville Freedom Songs & Stories will be performed by local artists: Matthew Cunningham, Dan Higgins, John Jackson, Cole Liles, Ethan Norman, Tomi Robb and Adam Whipple.

SUNDAY AT 5 PM EST – 6 PM EST

Evensong for All Saints Sunday will feature Psalms, readings, hymns, and music celebrating saints in every age. The choir will sing the Magnificat & Nunc dimittis in A of William Denis Browne, a Cambridge-educated composer whose life was tragically cut short during World War I. The anthem is a setting of 8th-century poetry by the Venerable Bede with music by contemporary British composer Cecilia McDowall. The glittering music and ethereal harmonies elicit the splendor of eternity and the endless day where the saints reside with Christ. The play will be performed Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM (no show at 5 pm on the 31st), and Sundays at 3 PM

Knoxville Children’s Theatre, in partnership with the Clayton Foundation and the Tennessee Arts Commission, will present a live production of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” “The Tempest” is traditionally considered Shakespeare’s final work and, as such, is sometimes seen as a kind of artistic farewell. Whether the Bard of Avon actually thought in those terms or not, we’ll never know; but the play is certainly among his most poetic. KCT’s version is adapted to 90 minutes and is geared for ages 12 and up.

Tickets will be limited to 60 attendees for each performance and groups/families will be distanced from each other. Masks will be required for entry.

Prospero, a magician of sorts, is also the deposed Duke of Milan. Usurped by his treacherous brother, Antonio, Prospero and his daughter Miranda are marooned on an exotic island, which is home to the sprite, Ariel, and Caliban (which Shakespeare describes as a deformed savage). Prospero uses his magic to subdue the island and compel both Ariel and Caliban to do his bidding. Twelve years later when Antonio’s ship sails close to the island, Prospero conjures a storm to bring his brother and his party to the island.

The play is performed by 15 talented young actors, from ages 13 to 17.

In Liberated from Storage II, viewers are able to see a painting by Belgian artist James Ensor, a 17th century Flemish tapestry based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, paintings by Joseph Delaney, illustrations by American commercial illustrator Walter Haskell Hinton, Mexican copper paintings, and modern and contemporary prints by Kathe Kollwitz, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Keith Haring, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Chuck Close.

The exhibition closes Wednesday, November 24.
