The University of Tennessee Department of Theatre presents Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory,” read by Carol Mayo Jenkins, recorded on location at the Mabry Hazen House, and directed by John Sipes. The free, streaming recording is available NOW through December 25, 2020. In conjunction with the reading, a “Full Belly Fund” virtual food drive has been set up with Second Harvest to provide food for the community. Truman Garcia Capote was an American novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, playwright, and actor. Several of his short stories, novels, and plays have been praised as literary classics, including the novella “Breakfast at Tiffany's” and the true crime novel, “In Cold Blood.” First published in 1956, “A Christmas Memory” is an autobiographical recollection of Capote's rural Alabama boyhood. Seven-year-old Buddy inaugurates the Christmas season by crying out to his cousin: "It's fruitcake weather!" Thus begins an unforgettable portrait of an enduring friendship between two innocent souls--one young and one old--and the memories they share of beloved holiday rituals. Now a holiday classic, "A Christmas Memory" has been broadcast, recorded, filmed, and staged multiple times, in award-winning productions.

The Knoxville Museum of Art and the Tennessee Art Education Association present the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition now through Sunday, January 10, 2021.

Now in its 15th year, the exhibition offers middle and high school students from around East Tennessee the opportunity to participate in a juried exhibition and to display their talents and be honored for their accomplishments in a professional art museum environment.

The East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition is open to students in grades 6-12 attending public, private, or home schools in 32 counties across East Tennessee. Approximately 311 works of the more than 530 entries in this highly competitive show made it through a rigorous jury process. The best-in-show winner will receive a purchase award of $500, and the artwork will become a permanent part of the collection of Mr. James Dodson, on loan to the Knoxville Museum of Art's Education Collection.

Since 2005, the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition has presented the work of nearly 4,000 students who have competed for a total of $7 million in scholarships made available to eligible juniors and seniors by colleges and universities from around the nation.

The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee, presents new art and new ideas, serves and educates diverse audiences, and enhances Knoxville’s quality of life. The museum is located in downtown Knoxville at 1050 World’s Fair Park and is open to the public on a limited schedule Wednesday through Sunday 1–5pm. Admission and parking are free. The Ijams Visitor Center’s Hallway Gallery features the diverse paintings of Melanie Fetterolf in December. Whether creating "rain paintings" (above left), capturing nature or studying human forms, Melanie employs a variety of techniques and styles to create something unique every time. She also teaches art classes and hosts painting parties at Painting Your World Studio.

Follow the Peppermint Trail - November 27 thru January 3

Follow the peppermints along the sidewalks in Downtown Knoxville to discover all sorts of treats featuring the favorite red-and-white candy, plus plenty of gingerbread, cinnamon, cranberry, apple spice, and other holiday flavors. From candy cane coffees and hot buttered rum, to eggnogs and peppermint martinis, you'll feel the holiday magic with every sip!

That's not all. Restaurants make holiday cheesecakes, fudge, donuts, cookies, and macarons, and boutiques and gift shops sell holiday t-shirts, soaps, and scented candles.

Every evening at dusk from Nov. 24 through Jan. 1, thousands of lights come on at Founders Park at Campbell Station for the annual Light the Park event.

During Light the Park, a slate of socially-distant activities will be offered, including grab-and-go items and storybook trails. A calendar detailing events will be available closer to the event. For updates and more info, check out the Visit Farragut Facebook event page for Light the Park.

Park restrooms will be open until 10 p.m. during the light display, except on Dec. 25.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 23, downtown Knoxville will be decked out in lights and greenery—including Krutch Park’s forest of twinkling trees and the 42-foot Christmas tree in the Krutch Park Extension on Gay Street—in time to serve as the background for fun family photos and selfies.

The Holidays on Ice skating rink will relocate from Market Square to the Civic Coliseum. The larger rink will allow skaters additional space to practice physical distancing while skating on the same ice where Knoxville Ice Bears play hockey. Starting Friday, Dec. 11, Holidays on Ice will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday with extended hours during Knox County Schools’ winter break. Market Square will shine with new, peppermint-themed lighting displays provided in partnership with the Downtown Knoxville Alliance. Downtown visitors should look out for Window Wonderland decorations and special holiday treats on the menus and shelves of businesses participating in the Peppermint Trail.
