In the mid-twentieth century, bluebird populations plummeted by up to 90 per cent, but one simple idea has helped bluebirds thrive again. Learn how you can be part of this truly American success story at this Zoom educational presentation on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.

Don Hazel, president of the Tennessee Bluebird Society, will share the story of one of our most beautiful songbirds all the way from egg to adult. Colorful photographs help tell this fascinating story. The program is sponsored by the UT Arboretum Society, the Tennessee Bluebird Society and the UT Forest Resources AgReseach and Education Center.

Don Hazel has lived in Tennessee for the past 14 years. He has written a bi-weekly nature article for the Glade Sun and the Crossville Chronicle newspapers for the past 11 years. He enjoys all thing outdoors and is president of the Fairfield Glade Fly Fish Club and vice president of Friends of Trails.

Under Rebel Rule Once More - The Constitutional Convention of 1870 and the End of Tennessee's Reconstruction on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 6:30pm.

Presented by Dr. William E. Hardy, the lecture will discuss the history of Tennessee's third (and current) constitution, the convention that created it, and the end of Reconstruction in Tennessee. Ratified in the wake of the Civil War, Tennessee’s third constitution enacted major changes in the state. The 1870 Constitutional convention and debates held within it rippled throughout the late 19th and 20th century. For some, it was a means to curb executive power and re-enfranchise former Confederates, but for Black Tennesseeans it opened the path towards Jim Crowe segregation. Our own Joseph A. Mabry was elected as delegate to the constitutional convention. What role did he play? Find out that and more!

The School of Music Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force presents a roundtable discussing the issues of race and power in music studies and higher education. The participants will be Danielle Brown (Ethnomusicologist, founder, and CEO of My People Tell Stories), Philip Ewell (associate professor of music theory, Hunter College of the City University of New York), and Joyce M. McCall (assistant professor of music education, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign). They will be sharing their research and insights into the topic and how their work is currently impacting academia.

The roundtable will take place through Zoom on Tuesday, February 23, 1:10pm - 2:25pm. This event is welcome to all.

The Silent Auction will close Saturday, February 27, 2021, at 9:30 pm. By bidding you expressly authorize the Knoxville Symphony League (KSL) to use the credit card registered to your account to fulfill any payment owed. Invoices will be emailed to successful bidders after payment is processed.

All auction items are pick-up only. You may pick up auction items starting Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 12 pm-4 pm at the KSO office located at 100 S. Gay Street Suite 302. Masks are required for entering the building. Additional pick-up hours are Monday-Friday 9 am-4 pm. If you do not pick up items before March 24th you will be deemed to have donated the items to the KSL and KSL will be able to resell the item at its discretion.

The WordPlayers offers a show for Black History Month. The Ends We Seek - a one act play with music by Ethan Norman - is a work of historical fiction, which moves between actual events in the 19th and 20th centuries. The play vividly and powerfully illustrates how major historical events — Lincoln’s election and Emancipation Proclamation, as well as the movement for civil rights inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — impacted the lives of ordinary individuals and families. A mother and a son, in two different centuries, play out the average person’s struggle with life in a dysfunctional society rife with racism. Scenes of daily life play out against a backdrop of history and lead us through moments where national, social, and political turmoil have lasting and powerful effects on ordinary families. With sharp dialogue, inspired by true stories, and with captivating musical interludes, The Ends We Seek personalizes and humanizes the experience of ordinary people swept up in the events of history.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts invites you to experience the 20th Sevier County Biennial Juried Exhibition. This exhibition is a juried, mixed media art exhibition presented by Arrowmont to recognize and foster the skills and talents of artists and makers who call the region of Sevier County home.

Features 76 original works created by 51 Sevier County, Tennessee artists. This is the first show open to visitors since the onset of the pandemic. Mary Welch Thompson, award-winning basket weaver, juried the 20th Sevier County Biennial. She said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge for all of us. Viewing this art let me forget for a short time. I had fun; it has been a learning experience and a challenge to select the Best of Show and the Awards of Merit pieces. The vibrant colors and imagination really stood out, paying tribute to the beauty of our natural surroundings, our mountain home.”

February 13th Workshop (Cyanotype Prints) 11AM-2PM - Learn one of the original photographic processes! Cyanotype is one of the oldest printing processes invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. In this workshop, you will learn to make a unique one of a kind handmade print by coating various papers with Cyanotype chemicals and developing them in the sun. A materials fee of $40 is due at or before the event. This class is limited to 5* participants. Be sure to register for the event by Thursday, Feb 11th to secure your spot!

February 23rd Class (Learning Series - The Negative) 6PM-8PM - The Negative will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn to load and process your film. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

February 24th (Learning Series - The Print) 6PM-8PM - The Print will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn the basics of enlarger use, burning and dodging and developing finished prints. For this class, you must bring your developed film and B&W photo paper. We suggest buying film and paper locally from F32 near West Town Mall. Pricing for this individual class is $60. This class is limited to 3 participants.

The Sacred, the Secular, and the Space In Between: African-American Vernacular Art from the Collection of Michael D. Hill

This exhibit showcases the work of self-taught African American artists who examine the intersections of spirituality and material culture. Guided by a compulsion, in some cases even what might be seen as a divine calling, to create, they produced paintings, sculpture, and utilitarian objects that are startlingly powerful in both their aesthetic forms and the life force they channel. Among the artists featured in this exhibit are Mose Tolliver, David Butler, Lonnie Holley, and Mary T. Smith. Their work may also be found in such prominent collections as the High Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
