My name is Bo McGuire. I am the first grandchild of the late, great Evelyn Louise Blanton-Washington of Gadsden, Alabama. Now, even though I conjure her as a great historical figure, y’all don’t know her. Not yet. She is my mama’s mama, my Nanny, and I speak of her as royalty because she is—queen of my heart, my imagination. She was the savior of my young, incredibly queer life in the sometimes cruel geography of rural, working-class Alabama.

Socks on Fire is a lyrical testament to Southern women couched in the battle for my grandmother’s throne. I returned home from New York City to find that my Aunt Sharon, my favorite childhood relative, had locked her gay, drag-queen brother, my Uncle John, out of the family home. As a queer Southerner, who can be both equally protective and skeptical of the South, Aunt Sharon stoked a fire within me to document the place and the people I call home. Through a series of stylized reenactments spun in with family VHS footage, Socks on Fire documents the fluidity of identity, personality, and performance in my hometown among my Mama’s people.

In furtherance of our mission to "preserve, interpret, and share" the traditions and culture of our area, we are providing these free admission opportunities to fill the gap for area schools who have missed out on field trip experiences they would have had in a normal, non-COVID year. It also coincides with our 15th Anniversary!

For all those who have missed out on their visits to the Heritage Center, we want to provide you with a chance to spend time with us. Safety concerns still exist, and for that reason, we will continue to abide by CDC and state safety guidance. And unfortunately, we won't have the hands-on activities we typically would have for a field trip. However, we want you to enjoy the galleries and historic village just the same and at no charge.

And for those of you who don't have school-age children, we want you to visit with us as well. Maybe you haven't been to the Center in years, or perhaps you're new to the area and have never seen the Center at all. This is your chance!

We encourage everyone to find their specific county and date on the calendar and make plans to be with us. Simply bring a valid photo ID with address on the day of your visit, and you and your household can enjoy free admission into the galleries and historic village. We look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Saturday, April 10: All Neighboring Counties in Western North Carolina

The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center places the highest priority on the health and well-being of their guests, employees, and volunteers. For this reason, the Heritage Center will enforce the following guidelines:

Social distancing of at least six feet while on the property (indoors or outdoors) is necessary. The Heritage Center is following CDC guidelines and requiring masks for ages 2 and up. All guests and employees must wear masks while indoors. Masks will not be provided but will be available for purchase at the gift shop. Reduced capacities will be allowed in common areas such as the gift shop. Hand sanitizer stations will also be available.

The Heritage Center will continue to closely monitor CDC guidelines as well as any state-issued orders pertaining to COVID-19. If changes are deemed necessary, the Heritage Center will broadcast alerts via website, social media, and email/telephone when possible.

Bikes & Blooms is a casual, family-friendly ride through scenic neighborhoods and along relaxing greenways.

Join Two Bikes and Dogwood Arts for a casual bike ride aimed at beginner to intermediate level cyclists. The route will lead through scenic South Knoxville neighborhoods and along relaxing greenways, with a mid-ride break at the Ijams’ wildflower gardens. Riders must wear helmets and be comfortable riding on the road. Riders are encouraged to bring their own water and snacks.

Westwood Welcomes You Back!

Historic Westwood is pleased to announce that the house and gardens have reopened with the addition of new Saturday hours. Our wonderful docents are looking forward to providing personal tours and sharing all the changes that continue to transform Westwood into a premier historic artist's home, studio and gallery.

Adelia Armstrong Lutz's copy of William-Adolphe Bouguereau's La Tricoteuse (The Little Knitter) has returned to its original location in the studio. Special thanks go to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection for purchasing the painting and allowing it to be displayed at Westwood once again. William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects. During his life he enjoye significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he embodied the tastes of the American Victorian age and his Gilded Age patrons which included the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and Carnegies. His works can be seen at museums such as the the Art Institute of Chicago and the Getty Center.

Tours are at the top of every hour. Please plan to wait on the porch or explore the gardens when not on tour. Exterior restrooms are available.
