For the past twelve years, the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville and the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) have partnered to present a biannual exhibition entitled “Arts in the Airport”. This juried exhibition was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. • April 20, 6-8 PM: Learning Series - The Negative will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn to load and process your film. $60, 3 participants.
• April 21, 2-4 PM: Learning Series - The Print will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn the basics of enlarger use, burning and dodging and developing finished prints. For this class, you must bring your developed film and B&W photo paper. $60, 3 participants.
• April 22, 6-8 PM: Earth Day Cyanotype Prints - Learn one of the original photographic processes! Cyanotype is one of the oldest printing processes invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. In this workshop, you will learn to make a unique one of a kind handmade print by coating various papers with Cyanotype chemicals and developing them in the sun. $40, 5 participants. The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents Artists on Location 2021 – an art show and sale at the Knoxville Museum of Art the evening of Saturday, April 24 from 5:30-9pm. Reservations will be required, check www.knoxart.org for details. Artists on Location 2021 promotes the museum’s connection to the local and regional art community and provides both new and seasoned collectors a rare opportunity to buy original paintings of Knoxville and East Tennessee.

From Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 23, talented artists selected through a careful, juried process will be painting outdoors in and around the Knoxville area. The public is invited to watch AOL’s artists in action as they capture on canvas a wide variety of subject matter, from urban street scenes to pastoral garden settings. The artists’ specific locations will be published on the KMA website, www.knoxart.org prior to the event and will be followed on the KMA Guild’s Instagram page @artistsonlocation.

This annual art show and sale will be held Saturday, April 24 and COVID-19 safety protocols will be in effect. Proceeds of the sale will benefit both participating artists and the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Painting in open air or plein-air became popular in the mid-19th century with artists of the French Impressionist movement seeking to paint light and its ephemeral qualities. The practice of painting on location increased in popularity with the development of transportable paint tubes and box easels.

Zoo Knoxville’s family-friendly “Craft Bear Nights” featuring craft beers, a food truck and special menu items from their own chef are back by popular demand. Craft Bear Nights will take place from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. each Thursday in April.

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. selected craft beers will be available for purchase, the food truck will be on site, and special menu items exclusively available in the evening will be offered at the zoo’s restaurants. Wine, other beer selections, and non-alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase.

The entire zoo will be open to explore, including the all-new Clayton Family Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus (ARC). The state-of-the-art ARC is an $18 million, 2.5-acre expansion featuring 85 species of reptiles and amphibians in indoor and outdoor habitats. It brings 40 new species to Zoo Knoxville, including Cuban crocodiles, King cobras, Lake Titicaca frogs, West African dwarf crocodiles, a Malaysian giant river turtle and a Linne’s two-toed sloth. The Fuzzy-Go-Round Carousel and Zoo Choo Train will also be open, weather permitting.

On Thursday, April 15, Stick in a Box will be the featured food truck. April 22 will feature the Penne for your Thoughts truck and April 29 will feature Gus and Son Greek Grill. Beverage offerings will include a selection of beer, cider, wine and non-alcoholic drinks each evening. A general admission ticket is required for ages 4 and up. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Zoo Knoxville members get free entry and parking. Westwood Welcomes You Back!

Historic Westwood is pleased to announce that the house and gardens have reopened with the addition of new Saturday hours. Our wonderful docents are looking forward to providing personal tours and sharing all the changes that continue to transform Westwood into a premier historic artist's home, studio and gallery.

Adelia Armstrong Lutz's copy of William-Adolphe Bouguereau's La Tricoteuse (The Little Knitter) has returned to its original location in the studio. Special thanks go to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection for purchasing the painting and allowing it to be displayed at Westwood once again. William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects. During his life he enjoye significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he embodied the tastes of the American Victorian age and his Gilded Age patrons which included the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and Carnegies. His works can be seen at museums such as the the Art Institute of Chicago and the Getty Center.

Tours are at the top of every hour. Please plan to wait on the porch or explore the gardens when not on tour. Exterior restrooms are available.

The play will be performed Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM, and Sundays at 3 PM. Tickets will be limited for each performance and each group or family will be distanced from each other. Masks are required inside the theatre at all times. Ionopure air sanitizers are used throughout the theatre.

"There are two ways to be real," the Skin Horse says. "The first is when you are real to one special child, and the second is when you are real to the world." More than anything he wants to be a real rabbit—real to the world. One night the Toy Fairy offers him his chance, but he must leave with her immediately. The boy, who is ill with scarlet fever, will die without him. Will the Velveteen Rabbit go with the Toy Fairy, or will his love for the boy cause him to turn his back on the thing he wants most? If he stays, what will happen to him? Margery Williams' beloved tale is faithfully told and carefully expanded for the stage.

“Watercolor 101, for Beginners,” with Vera Bogle. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, and maximum is 8.

Project Discussion, a bi-monthly artwork review session. Assess the artwork of participants and/or selected artwork in the gallery. The facilitator is John Anderson. 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. FREE and open to the public. Bring your artwork or just observe the session.

“Wire-Wrapped Natural Stones and Shells,” with Susan Smathers. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, maximum is 8.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28
Life Drawing, with Dena Whitener, 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. A live model will be available for artists to sketch. Bring your sketch pad, media of choice, and camera to capture the pose. Cost is $5 model fee.
