Tri-Star Arts: Closing Reception for Althea Murphy-Price

  • May 7, 2021

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Tri-Star Arts is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition in their new gallery at the historic Candoro Marble Building. A solo show featuring works by artist Althea Murphy-Price (Knoxville, TN) will open on Tuesday, March 9, and run through Saturday, May 8, 2021. A closing reception will be held on the evening of Friday, May 7 from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Althea Murphy-Price uses deception, desire, and ornamentation to form questions on the topics of truth, fascination, and attraction — often using manufactured hair (both synthetic and human) to exercise its role as embellishment and as a signifier of racial identity. In this work, hair functions as both subject and material and represents both assimilation and individuality. This body of her work consists of a variety of approaches to printmaking and sculpture to create works that are inspired by surface and texture. Her lithographic work is made to capture the realistic appearance of hair while screen-printed elements suggest object-like forms. Most recently, Murphy-Price has created 3D printed forms suggestive of wearable hair accessories.

This exhibition will be open to the public, alongside iconic spaces within the Candoro Marble Building, regularly from Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am until 5:00 pm going forward. Masks and social distancing (6 feet apart) is required. The gallery occupancy is limited to a maximum of 10 persons at a time.

In addition to the exhibition, five Knoxville-based artists have moved into the Tri-Star Arts studios at Candoro and begun their work. The studio artists are Jing Qin, Risa Hricovsky, Casey Fletcher, Jillian Hirsch, and Rachel Sevier Dallery.

Built in 1923, the Candoro Marble Building originally served as the offices and showroom for the Candoro Marble Company. The Aslan Foundation has just completed a restoration of the building. In partnership with the Aslan Foundation, Tri-Star Arts oversees programming at the site.

1981: THE CONCERT is a stunning recreation of Simon & Garfunkel’s 1981 Concert in Central Park. Simon & Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park was one of the largest and most beloved concerts of all time. Although it was attended by over 500,000 people, most of us didn't have the opportunity to attend this amazing show. This upbeat 90 minute show will take the audience back in time to that cool September night in New York City when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reunited for a free concert. Mrs. Robinson, Homeward Bound, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, Scarborough Fair, The Sounds of Silence…these are just a few of the featured songs that have made Simon & Garfunkel one of the most successful and beloved artists of all time.

Make plans to join us for the 2021 Concerts! Reservations must be made in advance for all Sunset Series Concerts. Reservations may be made no more that 30 days in advance by clicking on the links.

Town of Farragut: Mayor Ralph McGill Plaza Dedication

  • May 7, 2021

Category: Festivals, special events, Free event and Music

The public is invited to enjoy music and refreshments at the dedication of Mayor Ralph McGill Plaza at the historic Campbell Station Inn on Friday, May 7. The music begins at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Only ADA parking will be available onsite; all other attendees are asked to park at the Farragut Community Center (239 Jamestowne Blvd.).

The plaza is named in memory of Ralph McGill, who was one of the Town’s founding fathers and was instrumental in the vote for incorporation in late 1979. He served as Mayor from April 2009 through June 2018 and was heavily involved in the Town’s acquisition of the Campbell Station Inn from the Russell family.

The new lighted plaza, which features a restroom, park-like open areas, new landscaping, benches, interpretive signage and parking, is the third phase of improvements to the historic Campbell Station Inn property. Phase 1 was a master site plan and asbestos abatement, and Phase 2 was restoration and stabilization of the inn’s exterior. Phase 4 will begin when a determination is made regarding the inn’s future. The inn is not currently open to the public.
