Sundress Academy for the Arts: Poetry XFit with Elisha Mykelti
Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Literature, spoken word, writing and Virtual
The Sundress Academy for the Arts is excited to present Poetry Xfit hosted by Elisha Mykelti. This generative workshop event will take place on Sunday, May 16th, 2021 from 2 to 4 pm EST via Zoom.
Poetry Xfit isn't about throwing tires or heavy ropes, but the idea of confusing our muscles is the same. This generative workshop series will give you prompts, rules, obstructions, and more to write three poems in two hours. Writers will write together for thirty minutes, be invited to share new work, and then given a new set of prompts. The idea isn't that we are writing perfect final drafts, but instead creating clay that can then be edited and turned into art later. Prose writers are also welcome to attend!
While this is a free workshop, donations can be made to the Sundress Academy for the Arts.
Our community partner for May is AKIN (Allies of Knoxville’s Immigrant Neighbors), which is comprised of Knoxville people from all backgrounds, who work to encourage dialogue and build understanding about issues related to immigrants and refugees and to advocate for the dignity of just policies, while also building a welcoming environment where immigrants and refugees can sustain meaningful community as our neighbors. Donations to AKIN can be made!

Elisha Mykelti is a musical poet whose work focuses on the everyday—the absurd, the normal, and not so often pretty—life of the Black American woman. Through the use of dialect, her work pays special attention to her birthplace in the South and her roots up North. Elisha is a teacher and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee.

Category: Dance, movement, Festivals, special events and Kids, family
The circus is coming to town, and you’re invited! Young and old alike will enjoy Knoxville’s Tenth Annual Circus Extravaganza, which benefits programming for Knoxville youth in the community. During the last nine years, over 10,000 audience members have gasped and cheered for Knoxville’s hometown circus--Dragonfly Aerial and Circus Arts Studio (DFACAS)--as local talent perform daring and entertaining acts in the air and on the ground.
“The shows are always fun,” says Lissa McLeod a board member and instructor at the studio, “Not only do we get to present high quality entertainment for families, but we also create opportunities for at-risk kids to experience circus through our scholarship fund.” According to McLeod, in the past 10 years, over 200 local children benefited from the funds raised.
The Extravaganza, sponsored by WIVK, Tomato Head Restaurant, Event Rentals by Rothchild, Three Rivers Market, East TN Foundation and the Tennessee Arts Commission, includes four performances at Dragonfly Aerial and Circus Arts Studio. CDC recommendations will be followed and seating will be in 2-6 person pods outside under a tent. You can catch a show at two different times across three days:
● Friday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m.
● Saturday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m.
