Ijams Nature Center: Nature Preschool/Play Club In-Person Open Houses

  • May 20, 2021

Category: Free event, Kids, family and Science, nature

Ijams Nature Center will host in-person open houses for families interested in learning more about the full-time Ijams Nature Preschool and the new part-time Ijams Nature Play Club.

In-person open houses are Thursday, April 22, from 10 a.m-12 p.m. and Thursday, May 20, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Ijams Miller Education Building, 2915 Island Home Ave. The events will follow COVID-19 safety protocols to ensure everyone stays safe.

Classes start Monday, Aug. 9. The Ijams Nature Preschool meets Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and focuses on child-led, age-appropriate, experiential learning. Children ages 3-5 spend more than 50% of their time outdoors.
The new Ijams Nature Play Club follows the same model for ages 3-5, but is 100% outdoors. Classes have been held on Mondays and Wednesdays, but will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. for the 2021-2022 academic year. Both programs blend traditional education standards with the opportunity to learn about and explore the natural world. Children spend the majority of their time outdoors, where they learn through play, discovery and inquiry. Activities focus on sensory experiences with live animals, natural objects, artifacts and art materials.

The programs encourage curiosity, cognitive growth and motor skills through unstructured, child-led outdoor adventures. Children build problem-solving, math and engineering skills through hands-on experiences, and cultivate social skills through group play and opportunities for cooperative learning.

For more information about the Ijams Nature Preschool and Ijams Nature Play Club, visit www.ijams.org/nature-preschool or www.ijams.org/nature-play-club. Questions and requests for private tours should be directed to Administrator Leslee Moore at 865-679-5491 or preschool@ijams.org.

Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) lost a dear friend when Barbara Arwood, a well-known and vibrant educator, literacy advocate, dairy farmer, and arts supporter passed away in August, 2012. A founder of MACA, Barbara invited members of the community who had an interest in the arts to a meeting of the Hiwassee College Lyceum Committee in the spring of 1993. That meeting planted the seed which resulted in the organization of MACA. During the past 28 years, MACA has established a reputation as a leader in providing quality arts programs for the children, families, and communities of southeast Tennessee.

In recognition of the essential role Barbara played in the founding and growth of MACA, the Board of Directors is holding a Concert and Art Supply Drive as a Tribute to Barbara Arwood. MACA invites you to come out enjoy some sunshine during our fresh air concert and honor a woman who dedicated her life to improving the lives of children and adults through art and literacy. Barbara, an honorary lifetime MACA board member, was born in Iowa, graduated from the Mississippi University for Women, and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 1977, she moved with her husband Vic to a dairy farm near Madisonville. As an English teacher and Director of Student Support Services at Hiwassee College, Barbara had a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of young adults.

Thursday, May 20 @ 7:00 PM at Chilhowee Park, 3301 E Magnolia Ave

In this song/story collection compiled by Tomi Robb, we learn about the history of the local black community in the post Civil War era, the old layout of the town and the population movement that created the Knoxville we know today. The program recounts proud stories of prominent figures of the times and features songs created to express responses to a world where post-war steps forward were met with Jim Crow steps backward. As a community, we learn, develop empathy, and enjoy a great evening together!

Due to the generosity of our sponsors, The Swag and UT College of Law, we are able to offer this free of charge in the Homer Hamilton Amphitheater where there is plenty of room to spread out!
