HoLa Hora Latina: El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with Héctor Saldivar
Category: Fine Crafts and Free event
Join us in celebrating El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with local artist Héctor Saldivar at Casa HoLa during our November First Friday event inside the Emporium for the Arts, November 5th, 5pm-9pm!
El Día de los Muertos is a celebration that has been practiced for thousands of years in which families and communities gather to honor those who have passed away.
Modern-day Día de los Muertos celebrations derive from a combination of indigenous and Catholic traditions and take place from November 1st through November 2nd. Typically, families gather to create ofrendas, or altars, honoring their lost loved ones with various objects of significance, visit their grave sites, share stories and memories of the departed, and host a meal together to connect with their lost ones, families, and communities.
During our Day of the Dead celebration, Mr. Saldivar's collection of clay and papier-mache calaveras (skulls) and catrines (skeletons) will be on display, the winners of the UT Spanish Students' altar decorating contest will be presented, and tamales, sugar skulls, and pan de muerto will be on sale. A free and educational art activity for children will be available during First Friday and throughout the month of November. The exhibit will be made available online at www.holahoralatina.org.
Casa HoLa is located inside the Emporium for the Arts on the bottom floor in Suite 112 at 100 S. Gay St., Knoxville, TN 37902. Current office hours are weekdays from 9am – 5pm. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram @HoLaHoraLatina and Twitter @CasaHoLa for updates on upcoming exhibits.

Pellissippi State: The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
Category: Comedy, Free event and Theatre
Live theatre returns to Pellissippi State Community College this November in a play the director calls “one-third screwball comedy, one-third murder mystery and one-third farce.”
“The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” by John Bishop will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Nov. 5-6 and Nov. 12-13, as well as at 2 p.m. Sundays Nov. 7 and 14.
Capacity in the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the college’s Hardin Valley Campus is capped at 250 for each show to allow for social distancing, and audience members will be required to wear masks.
“Coming off what has been a very difficult year, I wanted to choose something light, fluffy and fun that would make people laugh,” said Theatre Professor Charles Miller, who is directing the play. “We all need some laughter right now.”
It’s the first live theatre performance at Pellissippi State since 2019, as the college’s Theatre program shifted to radio plays in fall 2020 and a livestreamed performance in spring 2021, due to the pandemic. Sixteen Pellissippi State Theatre students and recent graduates have roles on stage, backstage or as part of the production crew.
“Comedy is very difficult to do, and we hadn’t done one in a while, so this is a good opportunity for our students to learn,” Miller said. “There are a lot of things I’m trying to teach them – physical comedy, punchlines, throwaway lines. It’s not easy to teach, and it’s not easy to perform.”
“The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” opened on Broadway in 1987 and features blizzard conditions, secret passageways and an isolated mansion in a slapstick whodunit. To prepare for the play, students were assigned to watch black-and-white films from that era, including “Bringing Up Baby” starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant and “The Hound of the Baskervilles” starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes.
“There are references you’ll get if you watch old movies,” Miller noted, who added that the play is similar to the popular 1985 movie “Clue,” “but crazier.”
Tickets are free, but please obtain one at www.pstcc.edu/tickets, as seating is limited to half capacity due to COVID-19. To request accommodations for a disability at any campus event, call 865-539-7401 or email accommodations@pstcc.edu.

Kolaj LIVE Knoxville is a real time manifestation of Kolaj Magazine and Kolaj Institute. Full program will be available October 1, 2021.
Kolaj LIVE Knoxville is based at the Knoxville Museum of Art, the site of "Under Construction: Collage from the Mint Museum".
Featuring nearly 100 works by more than 30 international artists, 'Under Construction' explores the growth and impact of the collage technique from the 1950s to the present. It explores not only classic collages by Romare Bearden (1911-1988), but the technique’s role in inspiring artists and other forms of art during recent decades. Collage, in which materials from different sources are cut, torn, and layered to create new meanings and narratives, experienced a renaissance after World War II thanks in large part to Bearden. Complementing more than a dozen works by Bearden are examples by Radcliffe Bailey, Sam Gilliam, Kojo Griffin, Robert A. Nelson, Man Ray, Kristina Rogers, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Howardena Pindell, Robert Rauschenberg, and James Rosenquist.

A Field of Squares – A Quilt Pack Print Exchange at Gallery 1010
In this alternatively structured print exchange, 35 artists have been invited to participate from across the country to print fabric quilt squares, rather than paper. The participants will be using a variety of print techniques, including but not limited to screen print, cyanotype and woodblock; we even have a lithographer on board! Once each artist receives their pack of squares printed by the other participants, the fabric will be sewn together and assembled into a full sized quilt.
This exchange's theme is "American Landscape", which can be interpreted as a construction of an idea or ideal, stolen land or celebration of expansive space. The artists have been invited to explore domestic, public, micro or macro, historic, animal / vegetable / mineral, political, and/or personal subjects. The vision of this exchange is to use print to create a quilt: an object of comfort and catharsis. Many print exchanges printmakers participate in are archived in a box, destined to be tucked away until you fetch it out for a rare viewing. In its final form, the Field of Squares quilt will inhibit the participants' homes in a form of constant soft display and be interactive, since it holds an innate ability to provide warmth when wrapped around a body.
