Collective Actions for Black History: The Principles, Rituals, and Research Agendas of Douglass Day

Every year, Frederick Douglass Day brings thousands of people together in a collective action. We gather—in classrooms and community centers, churches and libraries—to transcribe newly digitized collections of Black history and culture. In this presentation, FDD Co-Directors Denise Burgher and Jim Casey will share the principles, rituals, and collective research agendas that have driven the launch and growth of this international digital humanities project over the past six years. What new directions for Black participatory and community-engaged projects are now possible? They will offer strategies for creating Black public and digital projects to meet the overwhelming public demand for opportunities to get involved in the preservation and memory of Black history.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Denise Burgher is the senior team leader for curriculum and community engagement on the Colored Conventions Project and at the Center for Black Digital Research at Penn State. She is finishing her PhD in English at the University of Delaware on Afro-Protestant nineteenth century women writers and theologians. Her work has been supported by a dissertation fellowship at the Library Company of Philadelphia and has appeared in Legacy, The Collective Wisdom Handbook, and in numerous public venues. She co-directs Douglass Day and the digital humanities Steenth Street Project on Alice Dunbar Nelson.

Jim Casey is an assistant professor of African American Studies, history, and English at Penn State, where he serves as associate director of the Center for Black Digital Research. Along with a book in progress on the history of editors, he is co-editor with P. Gabrielle Foreman of The Colored Conventions Movement: Black Organizing in the Nineteenth Century (2021) and co-founder and co-director of the Colored Conventions Project and Douglass Day.

This event is hosted in collaboration with the UT Humanities Center's Digital Humanities Initiative and is part of the Frederick Douglass Day 2022 celebrations. Learn more about all activities online.

Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture, UT Campus

The Ewing Gallery at the Art and Architecture Building is hosting, A Serious Look at the Funnies: 100 Years of Comics beginning January 24 through February 28, 2022. The exhibit examines 100 years of comics and comic history in America. Showcasing political cartoons, underground comics, graphic novels, and daily strips, this exhibition borrows from the collection of Denis Kitchen, cartoonist, publisher, and founder of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and from the University of Tennessee Special Collections.

These examples span 100+ years of comic history with the earliest work dating from 1906 and the most recent work dating from 2019. Noted artists from Denis Kitchen’s collection are Robert Crumb, Harvey Kurtzman, Peter Poplaski, Trina Robbins, Al Capp, Will Eisner, Richard “Grass” Green, and Ernie Bushmiller. Additional artists include Stacey Robinson, John Jennings, Brad Kahlhamer, Paolo Rivera, and Joseph Delaney as well as artists whose work is being shown at the other two galleries.

The Ewing Gallery is located at 1715 Volunteer Boulevard on the UT Campus. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, 10 a.m.-7:30pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 1-4pm on Sundays There is no admission charge. RE-IMAGINING MLK JR. AVENUE - COMMUNITY COLLABORATIVE CHARRETTE IS LOOKING FOR TEAMS TO JOIN IN

Our Community Collaborative Charrette is back and this time focusing on a piece of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue in East Knoxville.

It will begin on January 24th and run through February 24th, but you must contact us if interested by Friday, January 21st. Local architecture firms are encouraged to participate, though you don't have to be an architect to form a team.

English Country Dance is a style of folk dance preceding Square Dance and a forerunner of modern line dance.

• No partner needed
• Each dance is taught with a walk-through, having the music played to understand the pace of the dance, and called.
• Dance patterns are prompted throughout by the caller
• Classes will be held at the Cora Veal Seniors Center located at 144 College Street, Madisonville, TN
• Classes from 12-1 PM on January 20th & 27th, as well as February 3rd, 17th, & 24th.
• Classes are free of charge and are funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission
