The Chad Cooper Company: Justice on Trial

  • February 27, 2022

Category: History, heritage and Theatre

In a time when our nation is reeling from the pain of the pandemic, the injustice of an unjust judicial system and the desire for black people to be treated equal. Justice on Trial is a riveting production that challenges us to ask the hard questions that make our world a better place. It is a must see in times like these.

Two civil rights attorneys, Michael Crump (inspired by national civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump) and Elaine Black, are suing the U.S. Justice Department for reparations on behalf of the descendants of slaves.

To help convince the mixed-race jury, it features "traveler expert witnesses" portraying black history icons Harriet Tubman, Medgar Evers & Emmett Till. The story is punctuated by references to modern-day race-tinged injustices encountered by Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown Jr.

Dr. Cooper said the multi-racial cast digs deep in exploring America's tumultuous history of slavery, racial injustice, the Civil Rights Movement and Trump administration politics. Despite addressing past and modern issues of race, the play is suitable for all ages. The goal is to get people to think about the lasting vestiges of slavery and the country's evolving racial issues, including police-involved shootings.

Knox County Public Library: Screening of "The Lost World of East Knoxville: A Walk with Bob Booker"

  • February 27, 2022

Category: Film, Free event and Lecture, panel

Sunday, Feb 27 from 2-4 pm
East Tennessee History Center (601 S Gay Street)
Reservations required: (865) 215-8729 or nhill@knoxlib.org

East Knoxville saw many changes in the latter half of the 20th century, and its neighborhoods continue to undergo redevelopment today.

In the summer of 2020, Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection Manager Steve Cotham accompanied noted Knoxville historian Robert J. Booker on a walk through Booker's former neighborhood, known as The Bottom. Heartland Series videographer Doug Mills captured this historic stroll on video, as Booker recounts the history of the area encompassing the Civic Coliseum, the Old City and First Creek, before urban renewal radically changed the city's landscape. The resulting 40-minute video serves as a first-hand account of The Bottom pre-1960s, and includes archival photographs and film that make Booker's memories come alive.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Knox County Public Library.

For ADA accommodations, call (865) 215-8703 or send request to director@knoxlib.org 72 hours in advance of program.

Mighty Mud Gallery: Life In The Ocean: A 2-Day Sculpture Workshop

  • February 26, 2022 — February 27, 2022

Category: Classes, workshops and Fine Crafts

(All Skill Levels Welcome)
Feb 26-27
5:00 PM-9:00 PM
Teacher: James Krouse
Join James in exploring a multimedia approach to clay sculpture inspired by nature's diverse approach to life in the ocean. A unique background working with sea life and a passion for clay has led to some unusual insights into the intersection of form and function that I am happy to share. Many forms in nature may not seem to lend themselves to representation in clay but can be achieved by embracing new materials and connection techniques. Want to build larger than the kiln? Crustaceans build bigger with segmented forms. Want to build tall and thin? Take a deep dive into the natural armatures of corals, which withstand ferocious ocean currents with grace. Nature is endlessly creative, and often taking a look at nature's solutions to challenges of locomotion and growth can lead to new innovations in our approach to clay sculpture. Create sculptures with fins, feathery filaments, spines and spicules using the natural world as our guide.
*Each student will receive a 25lb bag of clay included in class fee.
*Students can expect sculptures to be incomplete at the end of the workshop and to be completed at the students' own time and pace.

UT School of Art: Light of the Truth Exhibition

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and History, heritage

UT School of Art students are joining with students from Tennessee State University and Fisk University for the 2022 juried student exhibition and exchange on the theme Light of Truth.

In an 1892 speech, Ida B. Wells told her audience, “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” She lived these words, determinedly and vocally confronting every social inequity she encountered.

Students have responded with artwork that sheds light on truths. As artists they illuminate their surroundings through leadership, activism, community building and sharing perspectives.

The Art Exhibition will take place in Nashville from January 18 to February 12, 2022 and at UT in the Student U from February 25 to March 26, 2022. Student Union, Gallery, 1502 Cumberland Ave. Knoxville, TN 37996
