Friends of the Library: Stay Home and Read a Book Ball

  • February 19, 2022

Category: Festivals, special events, Fundraisers, Literature, spoken word, writing and Virtual

Over the years, author events have been a popular element of Friends of the Library’s community outreach. Sadly, Friends has been unable to host any authors in person since early 2020, when Erik Larson and then Michael Twitty came to town. The Author Events Committee has high hopes, however, for returning to in-person author events in 2022.

Funds raised during this year’s Stay Home and Read a Book Ball on Saturday, February 19, will be earmarked for future author events. Author Events Committee co-chair Bonny Naugher is excited to see an increase in the amount of funding available for author visits. “Authors are not free, whether in person or virtual,” she says. “We would like to have several authors over the course of the year. Having additional funding means we can give our community the opportunity to meet and hear interesting authors.”

Those who purchase a “ticket” to this year’s ball (i.e., make a donation) will receive a 10% off coupon from Union Ave Books and two cocktail recipes (one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic) from Libacious.

Knoxville Botanical Garden: Orchid Kokedama

  • February 19, 2022

Category: Classes, workshops and Science, nature

February 19th, 12p

Orchids symbolize love, beauty, strength, & fertility. Not to mention they are one of the most diverse species with endless varieties.

Kokedama is Japanese in origin and refers to a style of bonsai. It showcases not only the plant, but highlights the root as well. This style of planting encapsulates the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Think of it as a living, sculptural art form. These are great if you prefer a hanging indoor garden too! Come prepared to use a combination of moss, twine, coconut fiber, and an orchid to craft your own version.

Participants will get to take home one kokedama plant that they have crafted. All are welcome, no previous plant experience is necessary!

UT Arboretum Society: Third Saturday Hike

Category: Free event, Health, wellness, Kids, family and Science, nature

It has been almost two years since the UT Arboretum Society has held a Third Saturday Hike due to Covid-19 closings. The organization is excited to announce the resumption of the hikes beginning February 19th at the UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge, 901 S. Illinois Avenue. Enjoy over 260 acres of forest and trails in this lovely wooded setting.

Our theme for February is a newcomer’s hike. Everyone is welcome to participate in this FREE guided hike. Newcomers to the area, newcomers to the UT Arboretum and newcomers to hiking are encouraged to join as well as previous participants. The hikes have been a staple of the UT Arboretum and UT Arboretum Society for over 13 years This is a great opportunity to “walk off” the food and festivities of the Super Bowl and the Olympics.

Join the hike that begins at 9am outside the UT Arboretum Visitors Center. The group will then leave for a guided hike that will be around two miles. The Visitors Center will not be open but portable restrooms are available in the parking lot area.

Please wear clothes appropriate to the weather and boots or good shoes for outdoor walking. We aim for this hike to be suitable for all, but the difficulty level of the hike is dependent on individual fitness. Be sure to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated as you hike. No pets, please. Due to ongoing research projects on our grounds, we are unable to allow pets.

The Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of ten outdoor laboratories located throughout the state as part of the UT AgResearch system. AgResearch is a division of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT Herbert College of Agriculture, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch and UT Extension offices, with locations in every county in the state.
