GO! Contemporary Dance Works: In the Shadows of Pine Mountain
Category: Dance, movement and Music
GO! Contemporary Dance Works will present a full length contemporary ballet, In the Shadows of Pine Mountain: the Scots-Irish exodus from Ulster to the hills of Appalachia at the Bijou Theatre, February 12 and 13th, 2022.
Diving into the raging and turbulent history of Appalachia, GO! with its powerful and unique style, will begin the historical journey in 15th century Ireland on the Ulster Plantation. Blending Irish and Scottish dance with ballet and contemporary, GO! intertwines generations with visually stunning Irish and Scottish scenes in act one and life in Appalachia after the Scots-Irish exodus in act two.
"We begin the ballet in a very rugged time in history," explains artistic director, Lisa Hall McKee. "The Scottish were so tough! This ballet celebrates the strength and beauty of the Scots-Irish culture without forgetting their struggles with the enormous unrest of tyranny, persecution and famine. They fought not only against the king's tyranny, but against losing their physical connection with their heritage, which attributed to their exodus to the Appalachian Mountains in the 1700's."
Known for its innovative style, GO!'s original and diverse choreography crosses genres of dance to take its audience on this historical and enchanting journey. Act one is visually stunning with lively, fun Irish and Scottish dancing, developing into emotionally charged scenes about rebellion and survival. Act two includes all the favorites of Appalachian history, moving from light hearted topics such as the moonshiners and revenuers, washboard bands and porch parties, to the darkness and depth of the coal mines. “There was a lot of personal loss and sacrifice in both the Scots-Irish and Appalachian people," shared McKee.
This landmark achievement includes a cast of 50 dancers and seven choreographers with authentic and elaborate costuming and set design. A celebration of Scots-Irish and Appalachian music, this ballet includes favorites such as Masons Apron, Miss McCleods Reel, Wayfaring Stranger, In the Pines, Down to the River to Pray, and You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive. "There is something for everyone. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will think. But mostly our audience will leave understanding this aspect of Appalachian origin and history,” added McKee. The Knox County Jug Stompers will playing live music pre-show and at intermission.
Advanced ticket prices range from $25 - $35. Tickets may be purchased at www.gocontemporarydance.com or by calling 865-539-2475. The performances will be 2:30 and 7:30 on Saturday, Feb 12 and 3PM on Sunday, Feb 13th. We are excited to invite the Knox County Jug Stompers to perform before each show and during intermission! Arrive 30 minutes early to enjoy a blend of old-time string band, country blues & jug band music.
