Mighty Mud Gallery: Life In The Ocean: A 2-Day Sculpture Workshop
Category: Classes, workshops and Fine Crafts
(All Skill Levels Welcome)
Feb 26-27
5:00 PM-9:00 PM
Teacher: James Krouse
Join James in exploring a multimedia approach to clay sculpture inspired by nature's diverse approach to life in the ocean. A unique background working with sea life and a passion for clay has led to some unusual insights into the intersection of form and function that I am happy to share. Many forms in nature may not seem to lend themselves to representation in clay but can be achieved by embracing new materials and connection techniques. Want to build larger than the kiln? Crustaceans build bigger with segmented forms. Want to build tall and thin? Take a deep dive into the natural armatures of corals, which withstand ferocious ocean currents with grace. Nature is endlessly creative, and often taking a look at nature's solutions to challenges of locomotion and growth can lead to new innovations in our approach to clay sculpture. Create sculptures with fins, feathery filaments, spines and spicules using the natural world as our guide.
*Each student will receive a 25lb bag of clay included in class fee.
*Students can expect sculptures to be incomplete at the end of the workshop and to be completed at the students' own time and pace.
