Oak Ridge Art Center: Ebony Imagery XIX
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
The Ebony Imagery Series began in 1984 with the showing of a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian service which carried the same title. It was curated by David Driscoll, noted Art and Art History Professor at the University of Maryland, who came to the Art Center to speak about the art and artists during the original showing. Along with the Smithsonian exhibition, the Art Center mounted a collection of work by local African American Artists which by all accounts was as compelling as those from the national art scene. We reprised the exhibition in 1989 and held it annually for a few years before settling on a biennial exhibition.
The 2022 exhibition is the nineteenth in the Series. During that time we have seen many wonderful artists whose work moved us. Some are still with the exhibition today, some have passed away and their voices are sorely missed, and new artists to the series add new perspectives. We expect wide range of both two and three dimensional media that will include some traditional forms like drawing on paper, clay sculpture, and oil on canvas to more contemporary media that utilizes new products or traditional products in new ways. Regardless of the technique, sometimes in spite of the technique, these artists bring us fresh, emotionally charged perspectives that move us.
We hope to host a closing reception March 19th from 2 to 4 PM and hope to see you there.
Oak Ridge Art Center, 201 Badger Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Hours: Tu-F 9-5, Sa-M 1-4. Information: 865-482-1441, www.oakridgeartcenter.org

Knoxville Writers’ Guild: Make Your Titles Do More of the Heavy Lifting
Category: Classes, workshops, Lecture, panel and Literature, spoken word, writing
Titles should serve your poetry and prose rather than simply helping to navigate the contents page. Using poetry titles as examples so we can cover more ground during this seminar, together we’ll look at titles that work hard and offer zing and pizzazz so that your own titles will entice readers and better serve your writing. What is covered in this seminar applies to prose—especially flash fiction, flash nonfiction, short stories, and personal essays.
Shuly Xóchitl Cawood grew up writing stories on her father’s blue Selectric typewriter. Her most recent book, Trouble Can Be So Beautiful at the Beginning: poems (Mercer University Press), won the Adrienne Bond Award for Poetry. Cawood’s other books include A Small Thing to Want: stories (Press 53) and the memoir, The Going and Goodbye (Platypus Press). Shuly loves to hike in the woods, doodle with her Crayola markers, and teach writing workshops. Learn more at www.shulycawood.com.
This workshop will be held online only. Online KWG Workshops are $30 for non-members, $20 for members and $10 for student members. Log in to take advantage of the reduced rates.

Art Guild at Fairfield Glade: Members’ Fiber Arts exhibition
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
The Plateau Creative Arts Center invites the public to come and enjoy the Art Guild members’ Fiber Arts Exhibit. The exhibit will be featured at the February 2022 Fun and Wine Reception on Friday, February 4 from 5:00-7:00 pm. The display will showcase a variety of pieces from the Art Guild members and will run through March 3, 2022.
We are thrilled to offer this opportunity to both artisans and attendees, to encourage interest and acceptance of many varieties of Fiber Arts as Fine Arts. This medium is non-utilitarian work that consists primarily of natural or synthetic fiber or yarn. It focuses on the design, materials and artistic labor as basics for the works’ significance that prioritizes aesthetic over utilitarian values.
The term Fiber Arts originated shortly after World War II, defining work by craft artists incorporating fabric into their works. The 50’s gave more recognition to Fiber Arts as Fine Arts, and by the 60’s and 70’s, Fiber Arts was embraced worldwide, with a growing number of artists creating 2 and 3-dimensional fiber works in a variety of genres. Fiber Arts continues to thrive and evolve, and the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is thrilled to share a variety of Fiber Arts for public viewing.
Located at 451 Lakeview Drive in Fairfield Glade (off Peavine Road). 931-707-7249 or www.artguildfairfieldglade.net
