Ed Lewis, Wood
After moving to Tennessee, Ed was able to have a woodworking shop and decided to try woodturning. He discovered he had a natural ability in using a lathe. After making the usual bowls, vases, and platters, he started experimenting with segmented pieces, especially “dizzy” bowls. He enjoys the process of making unique patterns that people will be proud to display. Ed volunteers at the Wears Valley Ranch where he teaches woodturning to students ranging in age from 10 to 17. He was accepted to be part of the 20th Master Woodworker’s Show in Knoxville, hosted by the East Tennessee Woodworker’s Guild, where two of his pieces were on display.

Carole Stoiber, Painting
Carole Stoiber is a two-dimensional artist who expresses herself in watercolors, oils, and acrylic paints. Her two-dimensional works are presently on display and for sale at the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville. To express three-dimensional ideas, Carole works in clay. When living in Harrisonburg, VA, Carole began painting original watercolor portraits of homes on commission. She called her business, “A Different Kind of House Painting”. Patrons marvel at her talent to create beautiful images with skillful techniques, vibrant colors, and imaginative designs that provoke emotions and memories with familiar, yet unique visions. Carole received a Fine Arts Degree with a Ceramic Concentration from Barton College (Wilson, NC; http://www.bartoncollege.org). Carole continues to learn and create every day in all watercolor and oil painting and ceramics. Carole taught art to children for over twenty years. Awaken Coffee will host an opening reception for artist Reem Arnouk, on Sept. 2 from 6-8 pm.

Born and raised in Syria, Art has been a huge influence in her life. Reem moved to America in 2013. She believes art to be a worldwide language and a way for human beings to communicate. “This art show theme reflects the different body shapes of women; perfect and beautiful. I believe what God said that we are beautifully and wonderfully made. In fact, God is the potter, we are the clay and the work of His hand. We are not called to be perfect, but to be beautiful. We are to accept, love, and support each other," she says.

Kirsten Murray and Kim Griffin, are the Art Guild’s featured member-artists for September. They will be honored at the Fun and Wine Reception on Friday, September 2, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the Plateau Creative Arts Center located at 451 Lakeview Drive in Fairfield Glade. Also on display will be a special member exhibit entitled Looking Down. Wearing masks is optional. Wine will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

Kirsten Murray’s lifelong career was in global logistics. In 2015, she retired in Fairfield Glade. Kirsten has always had a creative side and often had a fiber art project in her hands, as time permitted. Fast forward 35 years, her desire to focus on her art was rekindled. Several people contributed to Kirsten’s expanding skill set in the last few years. A friend of hers introduced her to the ancient Japanese braiding art of Kumihimo. This inspired her to learn about beads and beading techniques. This led to taking classes at the William Holland School for Lapidary Arts. Renowned professional bead artist Sherry Serafini introduced Kirsten to bead embroidery during some of her workshops and completely unleashed Kirsten’s inner beading beast in 2018. As she leaned more, Kirsten developed her own unique and easily identified stye and artistry.
Kirsten’s unique and easily identifiable stye and artistry has been recognized by patrons in many successful sales venues and art shows. She has won many awards for her wearable art creations, including Best in Show, 1st Place and Honorable Mention.

Kim Griffin is a native Texan who moved to Tennessee in 2012 with her husband of 42 years. Kim has participated in art shows across Tennessee and Texas, and loves the interaction with customers. Her work has been featured on the cover of two magazines, Art Doll quarterly, and Haute Handbags, and she has written several articles for each publication. Kim’s interested include beadwork, painting, Tambour Embroidery, travel, and gardening.

For the first time in its exhibition history, the McClung Museum is celebrating the deeply rooted traditions and colorful spirit of the Day of the Dead. The Spirit of Día de los Muertos (The Spirit of Day of the Dead) is the museum's first community collaboration exhibit created with guidance from Latino/a/x community members. The exhibition will open to the public on August 26 and be on view through December 11, 2022.

With displays in Spanish and English, The Spirit of Día de los Muertos highlights the rich history of the Mexican celebration that remembers loved ones passed. The exhibition opens with a traditional ofrenda (or altar) installation displaying an array of materials dedicated to deceased friends or family members. Familiar sights include colorful cempazúchitl (marigolds), ofrendas (altars) with food offerings, papel picados (decorative banners), and smartly dressed calaveras (skeletons).

Working primarily between the mediums of sculpture and painting, noted contemporary artist Radcliffe Bailey (born 1968) incorporates found objects and photographs into richly layered and textured compositions that address history, ancestry, migration, and collective memory. The artist incorporates a multitude of mediums in a variety of works inspired by his interest in diasporic histories and notions of identity and displacement. Several works reference turbulent voyages at sea, recalling the lives lost in Middle Passage, while others celebrate the unifying power of music and the legendary jazz musicians who pushed the limitations of western tradition through their radical compositions.

The exhibition is organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in conjunction with Jack Shainman Gallery, New York.

First Friday August 5th

“Rooms,” will be a solo show presenting a breadth of work by Ilana Lilienthal. A “room” is a space we create in order to be in, that we design to evoke certain feelings and emotions. When we create space, the goal is to influence both ourselves and others around us. In a conversation with a “room” we live or work in, there is a dance between forms, colors, and objects – creating a distinct energy field. This show encompasses three rooms, each inspired by a different palette. Red, Black & White, and Amber, each representing a color field working as a unique spiritual, psychological, and emotional experience.

Come see the new "Small & Mighty" art gallery A1LabArts created inside Scruffy's Cafe. A1's show will be displayed through September 27. Scruffy's Cafe will receive a 20% commission on all art sold. Artists may also use this gallery for future shows, beginning in October.

At 5:30 pm, Talisa Cantrell, a Scruffy's Cafe co-owner, will cut the ribbon on the new gallery.

All First Friday guests will receive free access into the cat room after signing a waiver. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be for sale.
