UT Arboretum Society: Mural of America Project program
Category: Free event, Kids, family, Lecture, panel, Science, nature and Virtual
Join the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society for a virtual program on Zoom Tuesday, September 20, 7 p.m. EDT as we learn from Stephen Alvarez, creator of the Ancient Art Archive (https://www.ancientartarchive.org/), about the Mural of America project. Stephen is an amazing photographer who uses photography, videography, and 3-D imagery to document indigenous art from native cultures all over the world.
Co-sponsored by Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning and the UT Arboretum Society, Alvarez will explain the Mural of America project that explores ten North American cultural landmarks illuminating the complex artistic mysteries of the past. Alvarez and the Ancient Art Archive’s extraordinary team of anthropologists, archaeologists, and Native American artists are exploring the ten sites’ artistic wonders, the rich cultures that gave birth to them, and how they remain meaningful today. Their work is still in progress on most of the sites, but their work at Tennessee's Devilstep Hollow Cave is complete and ready for all of us to experience.
An award-winning National Geographic photographer, film maker and explorer who produces global stories about exploration, adventure, culture and archeology, Alvarez has published over a dozen feature stories in National Geographic. The magazine has sent him from the highest peaks in the Andes to the depths of the deepest cave in the world. His latest National Geographic story on the Origins of Art led from early human sites on the southern coast of Africa to Paleolithic art caves in France and Spain. Moved by the power of humanity’s earliest artworks, Alvarez founded The Ancient Art Archive in 2016. The Archive is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to using the photography and the newest image-based VR technology to preserve and share humanity’s oldest artworks. Stephen lives with his family in Sewanee, Tennessee.
The program is free, but registration is required to receive your link. Register at www.utarboretumsociety.org. This program will be recorded, and closed captioning is available. Please note this program is scheduled on Eastern time. Please contact UT Arboretum Education Coordinator, Michelle Campanis, at mcampani@utk.edu with any questions or registration issues.

Addison's Bookstore: A Presentation and Conversation on James Agee
Category: Lecture, panel and Literature, spoken word, writing
7:00 PM – 8:30 PM EDT
Addison's Bookstore, 126 South Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902
Join Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee, Michael A. Lofaro, at Addison's for a discussion of Knoxville author, James Agee.
I believe that readers deserve to know the true range of James Agee’s writing and how many genres he influenced or created in his short life (1909-1955). After a brief overview of his work, we will focus upon Agee’s final version of A Death in the Family, not the heavily altered one that posthumously won the Pulitzer Prize in 1957, and some of his never before published poetry, to explore both the continuity of his vision and his achievement as an author. Our ninety minutes together will provide ample time for interchange, questions, and comments. I always learn something interesting from these sessions and I hope that you will too.
Michael A. Lofaro, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee, is the author or editor of twenty-two books, an online database, over eighty articles, and as well has received over sixty fellowships, grants, and awards. One of his favorite topics is Knoxville’s own James Agee and he has brought many new works of Agee’s to light in the ongoing scholarly edition of The Works of James Agee (11 vols.; 5 in print) and other publications.

Butterfly Foray and Monarch Tagging at Seven Islands State Birding Park
Enjoy the wonder and beauty of flying flowers as we search the park for monarchs and other butterflies. To help scientists understand the monarch migration, we’ll put tracking tags on the monarchs we’re able to catch. Kids of all ages are welcome. We’ll start at 1:00pm with a brief explanation of the monarch migration and its importance. We’ll take a short hike (1-2 miles) through the park to find butterflies and tag as many monarchs as we can. Butterfly nets will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it. Please note that monarch populations and migration patterns vary. On any day we could see many, few or none. No matter how many we see, we’ll learn about why monarchs and other butterflies are fascinating, their importance and how we can help them. Sturdy shoes and water are recommended.
