Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events, Kids, family and Music
The festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission is free to all but donations are accepted at the gate!
Campbell County roots music festival returns for a live festival - enjoy a full day of live music and Appalachian art! This will be the first time the festival has been in person on the grounds of Cove Lake State Park in Caryville since the pandemic. Inspired by Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong, this music and arts festival aims to bring together some of the strongest talent in the area that embodies the spirit of Louie Bluie. It celebrates Armstrong’s contribution to the arts and encourages musicians and artists to hone their own talents. Historically, Campbell County is a place steeped in roots music, and that’s still true today. It’s the home of Armstrong, the festival’s namesake, who grew up in LaFollette in the 1920s and was an incredibly talented man – visual artist, storyteller, and U. S. goodwill ambassador who played fiddle, mandolin and guitar, among others.
This year's festival is a double headliner: the Jake Leg Stompers and Tray Wellington
Inspired by Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong, this music and arts festival aims to bring together some of the strongest talent in the region. One of this year’s headliner performers is the Jake Leg Stompers, a band that specializes in last century’s party music. A self-dubbed “jug band,” the Jake Leg Stompers present pre-war roots music on period instruments in lively, authentic styles. The Stompers capture the rebellious spirit of pre-1941 American music from Memphis Jug bands to Appalachian Hillbilly to Fats Waller – when folk music was still considered dangerous.
Tray Wellington is also a headliner this year! From learning traditional bluegrass to studying diverse genres such as jazz, progressive bluegrass, blues, rock, and more, Tray has gone on to play with some of the most accomplished musicians in the world. Before reaching the age of 21, he has received a number of awards and accolades, including two awards from IBMA — 2019 IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year and 2019 Momentum Band of the Year (with Cane Mill Road).
Sparky and Rhonda Rucker will also return to the stage this year. Additional performers will be announced later on, so be sure to follow the festival’s Facebook page for updates.

Tennessee Mountain Writers Fall Workshop: Writing the Past
Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing
Sat Sep 24, 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM in Oak Ridge
With Jeremy Jones. “The past is a foreign country,” the LP Hartley quote begins, and in this workshop, we’ll cross that border. We’ll discuss the crafting of memories onto the page—how to create immediacy, when to add reflection, how to craft scenes—as well as talk through the many ethical considerations presented when the ever-faulty memory is involved—what if I don’t remember, what if someone remembers differently, what if this might upset someone? Above all, we’ll focus on how to grow your nonfiction into what it aims to be: something artful and yours. Fee: $85.

Clayton Center for the Arts: Trillium
Category: Free event and Music
They are not women who compose, but rather composers who happen to be women, and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, three of them will be celebrated in a performance by the trio Trillium at the Clayton Center for the Arts on the Maryville College campus.
Now in its eighth year, Trillium — composed of violinist Sara Lee-Cho, cellist Alicia Randisi-Hooker and MC Professor Emeritus Robert Bonham on piano — has performed across the country, including regularly at Maryville College, where Bonham received the Outstanding Teacher Award and whose name graces the Robert Bonham Music Faculty Award for Superior Performance, awarded annually to a student in the MC Division of Fine Arts.
“This program features composers who happened to be women,” Bonham said. “This is powerful music that deserves to be heard." That Bonham will perform these works alongside two talented and respected female colleagues makes the program even more special, he said. Lee-Cho has performed professionally with chamber and symphony orchestras in three countries and as a soloist at Carnegie Hall. Randisi-Hooker has performed extensively as an orchestral and chamber musician in both the United States and Europe, and as a teacher, her students have received numerous prizes, scholarships and competition awards.
The Sept. 24 performance will take place in the Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center for the Arts. Admission is free and open to the public, and masks are optional. For more information, visit the Trillium website at www.trillium-trio.com or call the Clayton Center box office at 865-981-8590.
