Come enjoy a concert of some of Mozart’s greatest religious works presented by the fabulous Amadeus Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Maestro Howard Skinner. The program includes the Coronation Mass (K. 317) and Regina Coeli (K. 108). Abigail Santos Villalobos, who scored a triumph in Knoxville Opera’s 2022 production of Mefistofele, is the featured soloist. ACE’s orchestra is led by concertmaster Miroslav Hristov, international violin soloist.

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is pleased to announce the guests for the September installment of our reading series. This event will take place on September 25th, 2022 from 1-3PM at Pretentious Beer Co.

Quincy Scott Jones is the author of two books of poetry: The T-Bone Series (Whirlwind Press, 2009) and How to Kill Yourself Instead of Your Children (C&R Press, 2021). He’s a Cave Canem fellow and a VONA alum whose work has appeared in the African American Review, The North American Review, the Bellingham Review, Love Jawns: A Mixtape, and The Feminist Wire. With Nina Sharma he co-curates Blackshop, a column that thinks about allyship between BIPOC artists. His graphic narrative, >BlackNerd<, is in the works.

Gale Thompson is the author of Helen or My Hunger (YesYes Books, 2020), Soldier On (Tupelo Press, 2015), and two chapbooks. Her work has appeared in American Poetry Review, Tin House Online, jubilat, and Mississippi Review, among others. A winner of the 2022 Poetry Society of America’s Emily Dickinson Award, Gale has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. She is co-host of the arts advice podcast Now That We’re Friends. She lives in the mountains of North Georgia, where she directs the Creative Writing program at Young Harris College.

Rowan Young was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. You can find her performing at venues all over the US. Rowan co-founded Tiny Stage Comedy, through which she produces several successful shows. She placed second in the Funniest Comedian in the Heartland competition in 2019, was the 2020 Plano Comedy Festival roast champion, and was named Knoxville’s Finest Comedian by Blank magazine in 2021 and 2022. Rowan has opened for comics like Dusty Slay, Billy Wayne Davis, and Shane Torres.

Ryan Dunaway is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist out of Knoxville, TN. He plays with various groups in styles ranging from folk and bluegrass to jazz. His songwriting uses elements from these different genres with a longing yet bright acoustic sound.

In the final week of July, Appalachia experienced record rainfall which caused immense flooding throughout the region. One of the areas most heavily impacted was eastern Kentucky, which received over 8 inches of rain from July 27th to the 28th, when the governor declared a state of emergency. The downpour resulted in widespread property damage, leaving many without electricity or running water, and caused several deaths. In the wake of this tragedy, the community has organized to support one another in the rebuilding efforts.

Our community partner for the month of September, the Hindman Settlement School was damaged in the floods, and as they rebuild their facilities they are also serving as a hub for community support and recovery. They provided safe, dry accommodations and hot meals to people who lost their homes, and they continue to distribute food, water, and other vital supplies throughout the community. When you donate to the Hindman Settlement School, you are donating to rebuilding a vital community space that provides safety, resources, and comfort in times of need.

September 23 - October 9: THE LITTLE PRINCE by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar

In River & Rail Theatre Co.'s first-ever Theatre for Young Audiences production, we get to bring one of our favorite children's stories to life. When a world-weary aviator finds themself stranded in a strange new world, the friendship and guidance of a small child enables them to shed what is not useful and pay attention to the life and beauty before their eyes. Butterfly Foray and Monarch Tagging at Seven Islands State Birding Park

Enjoy the wonder and beauty of flying flowers as we search the park for monarchs and other butterflies. To help scientists understand the monarch migration, we’ll put tracking tags on the monarchs we’re able to catch. Kids of all ages are welcome. We’ll start at 1:00pm with a brief explanation of the monarch migration and its importance. We’ll take a short hike (1-2 miles) through the park to find butterflies and tag as many monarchs as we can. Butterfly nets will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it. Please note that monarch populations and migration patterns vary. On any day we could see many, few or none. No matter how many we see, we’ll learn about why monarchs and other butterflies are fascinating, their importance and how we can help them. Sturdy shoes and water are recommended.
