Knoxville Writers' Guild: Jack Neely & Knoxville History Project
Category: History, heritage and Literature, spoken word, writing
Thursday, September 8, 7:00 PM
Jack Neely, longtime journalist and author of several books, including, most recently, Knoxville, Tennessee: The Curious Visitor's Guide, and Historic Bearden: The 200-Year Story of Knoxville's Fourth Creek Valley, is executive director of the nonprofit Knoxville History Project. He'll be talking about KHP's latest project, a Walking Guide to Knoxville Literature, due out this fall. A labor of love first proposed back in the 1990s, the first-ever handy pocket guide will offer biographical information and excerpts from the works of well-known novelists and poets like James Agee, Nikki Giovanni, Cormac McCarthy, Frances Hodgson Burnett, David Madden, George Washington Harris and others--as well as quite a few surprise curves, including lore about Kurt Vonnegut, Jean-Paul Sartre, Neil Gaiman, Tennessee Williams, and other iconic figures who had at least glancing adventures with this old city of letters, which to some degree was founded as a publishing center. It'll be downtown-focused, because that's the part of town authors have written most about, but will connect Haley Heritage Square to what little remains of Fort Sanders' very lively literary heritage, with references to farther-flung parks.
Knoxville Writers’ Guild: Meetings take place at Central United Methodist Church's Fellowship Hall, 201 E. Third Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37917. Information: www.KnoxvilleWritersGuild.org

SEPT 8 | 7:30 PM
Anderson East, the Alabama-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s seductively vintage voice is infused with R&B, gospel, and Southern soul. Maybe We Never Die is East’s first new music since his breakthrough album, Encore, which featured the Grammy-nominated #1 AAA radio single, “All On My Mind.” Rolling Stone declared, “On Encore, East’s influences meld seamlessly, stacking the album with Stax-worthy R&B grooves, gospel-blues ooohs and aaahs, surging keys and blasting brass.” New York Times praised the album as, “...an often lustrous revisiting of raucous Southern soul, rousingly delivered and pinpoint precise.”
Anderson East and his band have performed sold-out shows worldwide and have been featured on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and This Morning Saturday, NBC’s TODAY and Late Night with Seth Meyers, PBS’ Austin City Limits and more.
