Tennessee Stage Company: Measure for Measure

Category: Theatre

Oct 8-23, Thu-Sun at 7 PM (and Sun Oct 16, 2 PM)
At Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Avenue Knoxville, TN 37920

Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure is the story of what happens when a man, new in his power and deep in his religion, forces a city to its knees and a woman to the end of her faith. Angelo sentences Claudio to death for impregnating his longtime sweetheart. When Isabella, Claudio’s sister and a soon-to-be Nun, begs for Angelo to change his mind, he offers her a choice: Claudio can die, or she can give up her chastity to Angelo in exchange for Claudio’s life.
“[W]ith an outstretched throat, I’ll tell the world aloud what man thou art.” “Who will believe thee, Isabel?”
Guests should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets so they will have room to spread out and observe proper social distancing while enjoying the outdoor performances.

Niswonger Performing Arts Center: Tommy Emmanuel, CGP

  • October 8, 2022

Category: Music

OCT 8 | 7:30 PM
with special guest Gareth Pearson

Two qualities define Tommy Emmanuel’s greatness. The first, predictably, is his extraordinary guitar playing. Considered to be among this planet’s greatest guitarists, his playing is simply miraculous, as it would take three musicians, or more, to do what he does solo. Who else can lay down the rhythm part, dig into the riff and sing the melody all at once on just one acoustic guitar? The second, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing, is the joy.

It’s one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar but to do it with that smile of the ages, that evidence of authentic, unbridled delight, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does. Although his expression is instrumental, he comes to the guitar much more like a vocalist, positively singing melodies through the strings. He inhabits the tunes he performs, delivering every nuance and turn of phrase.
