The Historic House Museums of Knoxville (HHMK) and the East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) invite you to Founder’s Day: A Celebration of 231 Years of Knoxville at the East Tennessee History Center. During this celebration, HHMK reflects on the 40th anniversary of the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville with a special presentation by former Mayor Randy Tyree at 12:00 PM. Visitors can also enjoy Petros, an international popcorn buffet, and birthday cake. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign a birthday card for Knoxville, and enjoy free admission to the Museum of East Tennessee History, including the signature exhibition Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee and the temporary exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, You Should’ve Been There.” This event is FREE, but please RSVP at http://www.hhknoxville.org/foundersday/
Born and raised in Tennessee, Randy Tyree received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Middle Tennessee State University and a law degree from the University of Tennessee. Tyree then spent 14 years in various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and served as Police & Fire Commissioner for the City of Knoxville. Tyree continued public service, becoming the youngest candidate ever to become the mayor of Knoxville at the age of 34, at which time he presided over the city during the 1982 World’s Fair – the only financially successful World’s Fair in recent history.
ABOUT HHMK
From a rough frontier settlement to a grand state capital to the attractive city you see today, the history of Knoxville is a vivid tale of the trials and triumphs of a growing town and a growing nation. It’s a wild and often surprising tale marvelously told by the city’s most historic homes. From log cabins to frame houses to stately stone mansions, these seven Knoxville landmarks invite you into the past to experience the times and events that shaped them and the families who occupied them. Each is a chapter of history unto itself. And yet, together, they exemplify and celebrate the continuing pioneering spirit that created Knoxville and our great nation. UT Humanities Center: Distinguished Lecture Series with Helen Solterer
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
UT Humanities Center 11th Annual Distinguished Lecture Series
Speaker: Helen Solterer
Professor of Romance Languages, Duke University
Lecture Title: “Justice, Mercy & Two Disabled Homeless: Scenes from an Open-Ended Social Drama in French”
Date: Monday, October 3
Time: 3:30 PM
Lindsay Young Auditorium, rm 101
John C. Hodges Library, 1015 Volunteer Boulevard, Knoxville TN 37996
The figures Justice and Mercy, well-known to Christian and Jewish communities from a Biblical episode, were enacted frequently by Christian and civic fraternities in early modern towns. These same city people also improvised a sketch featuring one blind person and another who appears ‘lame.’ The scenes they played: the trial of these figures before time ‘began’ and the travails of this duo after the so-called Fall.
What do these dramas that embody both ideal principles and people in trouble tell us about popular views on irreconcilable social relations? In this brief cultural history, Helen Solterer will investigate a set of such scenes in French-speaking towns around 1450, in the wake of World War Two, and again today to show how people use early theatrical fictions to meet the civic conflicts of their time, to respond to inequities, and to energize the struggle of living together day in, day out.
Helen Solterer is Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Duke University. Her writing and teaching combine her research on early modern literature and culture and her work in twentieth-century cultural history. Timely Fictions in French, her latest book supported by the Guggenheim Foundation is nearing completion. Out this fall, the collection of essays edited with Vincent Joos, Migrants Shaping Europe: Multilingual Literatures, Arts and Cultures. After hours, she writes in the vein of family history. James Joyce Remembered, edition 2022, a collective volume, co-edited with Alice Ryan, that she spearheaded with University College Dublin colleagues around the essay of C.P. Curran, her grandfather, appeared for the Decade of Centenaries marked in Ireland. Earlier books include: Medieval Roles for Modern Times, Theater and the Battle for the French Republic, translated into French, and the MLA prize-winning Master and Minerva, in a feminist vein.

River & Rail Theatre Company: The Little Prince
Category: Kids, family and Theatre
September 23 - October 9: THE LITTLE PRINCE by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar
In River & Rail Theatre Co.'s first-ever Theatre for Young Audiences production, we get to bring one of our favorite children's stories to life. When a world-weary aviator finds themself stranded in a strange new world, the friendship and guidance of a small child enables them to shed what is not useful and pay attention to the life and beauty before their eyes. The Little Prince takes on an imaginative and playful perspective, reminding us all what it is like to look at the world through children's eyes again. "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."

Butterfly Foray and Monarch Tagging at Seven Islands State Birding Park
Enjoy the wonder and beauty of flying flowers as we search the park for monarchs and other butterflies. To help scientists understand the monarch migration, we’ll put tracking tags on the monarchs we’re able to catch. Kids of all ages are welcome. We’ll start at 1:00pm with a brief explanation of the monarch migration and its importance. We’ll take a short hike (1-2 miles) through the park to find butterflies and tag as many monarchs as we can. Butterfly nets will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it. Please note that monarch populations and migration patterns vary. On any day we could see many, few or none. No matter how many we see, we’ll learn about why monarchs and other butterflies are fascinating, their importance and how we can help them. Sturdy shoes and water are recommended.
