The WordPlayers: Souvenir: A Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins

Category: Comedy and Theatre

The WordPlayers of Knoxville opens its 2022-23 season with “Souvenir: A Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins” by Stephen Temperley. Performances are Oct. 6, 7, 13 & 14 at 7:30 PM and Oct. 9 & 16 at 2:30 PM at Erin Presbyterian Church, 200 Lockett Rd., Knoxville. Tickets, $22 for adults and $18 for students, are available online at wordplayers.org and at the door. For more information, please call 865-539-2490.

Florence Foster Jenkins, one of the world’s most famous society eccentrics, suffered under the delusion that she was a great coloratura soprano when she was, in fact, incapable of producing two consecutive notes in tune. Nevertheless, her annual recitals in the ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton brought her extraordinary fame. As news of her terrible singing spread, so did her celebrity. The climax of her career was a concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944 which sold out in two hours. “Souvenir,” by turn hilarious and poignant, tells her story through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon. McMoon initially regards her as little more than an easy way to pay the rent, but, as he gets to know her, his contempt for her gives way to reluctant admiration, then friendship and affection.

UT Arboretum Society: Lending a Helping Hand - Wildlife Rehabilitation

Category: Free event, Lecture, panel, Science, nature and Virtual

Join local naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales as we learn how wildlife are nursed back to health at the UT Arboretum Society’s First Thursday Nature Supper Club, via Zoom on Thursday, October 6 at 7 p.m. EDT.

You provide your own stay-at-home supper, and we provide the nature as Stephen Lyn will answer questions such as: Who is allowed to care for an injured hawk, owl, or opossum? What does the work of wildlife rehabilitation entail? He will provide answers explaining how rehabilitators would treat their wounds and give them a safe and quiet place to heal. If it is an orphaned songbird, how often would you feed it until it can fly away on its own?

The program is free, but registration is required to receive your link. Register at www.utarboretumsociety.org. This program will be recorded, and closed captioning is available. Please note this program is scheduled on Eastern time. Please contact UT Arboretum Education Coordinator, Michelle Campanis, at mcampani@utk.edu with any questions or registration issues.

Pellissippi State: hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash

  • October 6, 2022

Category: Free event, Lecture, panel and Music

Hip-hop innovator Grandmaster Flash is coming to Pellissippi State Community College next month – and you’re invited to experience his master class on the Birth of a Culture.

Grandmaster Flash will hold an audio and visual lecture and demonstration 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the college’s Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville. The event is free and open to the public.

“Student Engagement and Leadership caters to all our students, and this event targets nontraditional students but also will teach our traditional students the history of what they know today,” said SEAL Coordinator Delnita Evans. “So much of their music today is sampled from those that laid the foundation. Why not host the pioneer of what we know, love and continue to use in music today? If it weren’t for Grandmaster Flash, our TikTok sound bites wouldn’t be a thing.”

Grandmaster Flash is one of hip-hop’s original innovators. From the South Bronx in the early 1970s, he manipulated music by placing his fingers on the vinyl, perfected beat looping and discovered many of the most iconic beats still sampled today.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was the first rap group induced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. From his electric live shows to his production role on Netflix’s “The Get Down,” Grandmaster Flash is a historian, storyteller and a cultural force.

Grandmaster Flash’s appearance at Pellissippi State will be an educational, entertaining and interactive experience. He will show the audience how, as a teenager, he used his knowledge of electronic repair to begin experimenting in his bedroom with different styles and techniques. As the architect of the quick mix theory and science behind turntablism, Grandmaster Flash will visually lay out these formulas and concepts using two turntables equipped with live cameras. He also will show classic footage of his extensive record collection and treat the audience to some rare break beats.

The mission of Pellissippi State is to provide a transformative environment fostering the academic, social, economic and cultural enrichment of the individual and the community. For more information about the college, visit www.pstcc.edu or call 865.694.6400.
