In a time when men dominated the field of journalism, Nellie Kenyon broke down barriers for women reporters. Working for the Chattanooga News, she covered the leadup to the Scopes Trial, helped catch a bank robber, and interviewed Al Capone on his way to prison. After joining the Tennessean in Nashville, she did investigative reporting on the Georgia Tann adoption scandal, broke the story about a hidden tape recorder in the governor's office, and covered Jimmy Hoffa's trials in Tennessee. She chronicled some of the 20th century's most memorable episodes in her fifty-year career.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tyler L. Boyd is the author of the new book Nellie Kenyon: Trailblazing Tennessee Journalist. Born and raised in Athens, he earned his B.A. in History and M.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee and has taught in Loudon, Bradley, and McMinn counties. He is a Programs Committee member at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum and Vice President of the McMinn County Historical Society. His first book, Tennessee Statesman Harry T. Burn, won the East Tennessee Historical Society's Award of Distinction. His third book, coming in 2023, is about a brutal political machine in Polk County that was violently overthrown two years after the Battle of Athens.

Songs and Stories from Bluetick Tavern: Terry Klein
Category: Culinary arts, food, Free event, Lecture, panel and Music
Songs and Stories from Bluetick Tavern, 128 W Broadway, Maryville, continues its ongoing series of concerts and conversations with another free show at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21 with special guest, highly lauded singer/songwriter Terry Klein. As always, this event offers an opportunity not only to share an intimate listening experience with the artists performing their songs in stripped down settings, but also to learn about the craft and creativity that goes into their music and performance.
Think “The Actor’s Studio,” but geared to musicians.
Terry Klein is a performing songwriter, yes, but he’s also worked in factories, in hospitals, as a political operative, and tried cases as a lawyer in state and federal courts. He’s lived on both coasts and lots of places in between and been to 49 of the 50 United States. In his writing and on stage he attempts to mollify a relentless inner voice that says mean, unforgiving things to himself that he’d never say to anyone else ever.
Terry has made three records. The first two, Great Northern and Tex, were produced by Texas folk hero Walt Wilkins in Austin, Texas and garnered praise from Mary Gauthier and Rodney Crowell and press and radio outlets across the United States and Europe. For his third album, Terry went to Nashville and worked with producer and multi-instrumentalist Thomm Jutz. Recorded over a few breakneck days in October 2021, it’s called Good Luck, Take Care and it’s a raw, visceral departure from the work he’s done before. Ten dynamic songs that take hold from the first measure, knock you off balance, and won’t let go without a fight. Terry has played in some of the most hallowed rooms in the singer-songwriter business: Club Passim, The Bluebird, The Blue Light, The Saxon Pub, Anderson Fair, to name a few. He also played in a heavy metal band in Los Angeles a couple of lifetimes ago, thrashing around on grimy, storied stages like the Troubadour and the Whiskey A Go Go.
Lee Zimmerman is the host for Songs and Stories.

Zoo Knoxville: Monarch Tagging
Category: Kids, family and Science, nature
Butterfly Foray and Monarch Tagging at Seven Islands State Birding Park
Enjoy the wonder and beauty of flying flowers as we search the park for monarchs and other butterflies. To help scientists understand the monarch migration, we’ll put tracking tags on the monarchs we’re able to catch. Kids of all ages are welcome. We’ll start at 1:00pm with a brief explanation of the monarch migration and its importance. We’ll take a short hike (1-2 miles) through the park to find butterflies and tag as many monarchs as we can. Butterfly nets will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it. Please note that monarch populations and migration patterns vary. On any day we could see many, few or none. No matter how many we see, we’ll learn about why monarchs and other butterflies are fascinating, their importance and how we can help them. Sturdy shoes and water are recommended.
