Tennessee State Museum: Lunch & Learn - Appalachian Makers and Arrowmont

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Virtual

Appalachian Makers and Arrowmont: The Settlement School, Arrowcraft, and its Women Weavers

Kelli Fisher, curatorial intern for the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, will explore the early history of Arrowcraft, an important facet of Gatlinburg’s history and the history of Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Building on the knowledge of Frances Fox, historian and past apprentice to the Master Weaver for Arrowcraft, and using materials from Arrowmont’s collection and archives, this presentation will tell the stories of some notable Appalachian women who worked and shaped Arrowcraft and, in turn, Arrowmont as it exists today.

Opened in 1926, the Arrowcraft Shop continued the project established by the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School of meeting the needs of those who lived in the Smoky Mountains. The shop also allowed Appalachian makers the opportunity to make and sell their crafts for more equitable prices than they could find on their own. Their wares—including handmade baskets, coverlets, and chairs—were incredibly popular, in part due to the revival of the American Arts and Crafts movement, which prized high-quality workmanship.

This Lunch and Learn event is in-person in the Museum’s Digital Learning Center at 12:00 p.m. No RSVPs are required to attend this free event. It will also be livestreamed on the Museum’s website at TNMuseum.org/Videos.

Boxed lunches made by Apple Spice Nashville are available for purchase to enjoy during the event. The lunches will include a sandwich, chips, and a cookie. Lunch orders must be placed by noon on Tuesday, September 13. Please order your boxed lunch on the ticket registration page.

Knoxville History Project: A Walking Tour of UT Campus

Category: Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Virtual

History Happy Hour on Zoom: Thursday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.

Our September History Happy Hour on Zoom will preview a brand-new project we may actually have finished by then: a walking tour of the University of Tennessee’s campus. Distinctive in many ways, the campus on a river peninsula features geographical and architectural landmarks. It may be America’s only campus to include both a genuine Indian mound and a Civil War battlefield, and though its original antebellum relics all vanished more than a century ago, what remains tells a story of American architecture in the 20th century. We’ll talk about what once-familiar Victorian-suburban landmark, a streetcar destination more than a century ago, still exists on campus almost untouched; and what building changed Knoxville’s cultural habits in the 1930s and ’40s. (It may have been better known to Frank Sinatra and Eleanor Roosevelt than it is to most Knoxvillians today!) We’ll even tell you a few things about that big stadium you may not know.

A limited number of tickets are available for this tour at $25.00 per person plus tax: https://knoxville-history-project.square.site/

Clarence Brown Theatre: Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express

Category: Literature, spoken word, writing and Theatre

ALL PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN CANCELED

The Clarence Brown Theatre will open its 2022/2023 Season with Agatha Christie’s masterpiece, “Murder on the Orient Express,” running on the MainStage September 14th to October 2nd.

Tickets may be purchased by calling the Box Office at 865-974-5161 or online at https://clarencebrowntheatre.com/plays/murder-on-the-orient-express/. UT Faculty/Staff receive 15% off ticket prices. Students see the previews for FREE, the rest of the performances for $5, and Opening Night for $10.

The Pay What You Can Preview performance, where patrons can name their own price, will be held Wednesday, September 14. Behind the Scenes Sunday will take place following the Sunday, September 18 matinee. A Talk Back will take place Sunday, September 25 following the matinee. Deaf Night at the Theatre will take place Tuesday, September 27. The Open Captioned performance is Sunday, October 2 at 2:00 pm.

Free and convenient parking is available in the Upper Parking of McClung Tower Garage (G2) on Volunteer Boulevard.

The production contains all the glamour, intrigue, and suspense of Christie’s novel, with a healthy dose of humor to quicken the pace. Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of year, but by morning there is one less passenger. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed numerous times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer – before he or she can strike again.

Clarence Brown Theatre / Carousel Theatre, 1714 Andy Holt Ave on the UT campus, Knoxville, TN 37996. For information/tickets: 865-974-5161, www.clarencebrowntheatre.com
