We’ll be hosting maker space at the Cattywampus Clubhouse during the days leading up to the Big Ears Festival for community members to help us work on big puppets for the parade, as well as make their own art to carry. We’ll have cardboard, paint, and some additional supplies available for making giant cardboard flats, flags, and noisemakers. Feel free to bring your own projects already in process. All ages are welcome! Masks are encouraged.

Young American pianist Katherine Benson is quickly emerging as an important artistic figure of her generation through her “stunning” (ArtsKnoxville) performances and passion for arts leadership.

A native of Jonesborough, TN, Katherine has performed as a soloist across the USA and abroad in Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand. Katherine has additionally garnered numerous triumphs in the competition sphere, having won top prizes in the Seattle, Kerikeri, Walled City Music, Teresa Carreño, and Thousand Islands International Piano Competitions, as well as the grand prize of the 2020 George R. Johnson Concerto Competition. Katherine was most recently one of only four finalists in the prestigious Heida Hermanns International Music Competition.

An avid chamber musician, Katherine is the Artistic Director and pianist for The Paramount Chamber Players (TPCP), one of the premier chamber music ensembles of the the Appalachian region and now in its eighteenth concert season.

East Tennessee Bluegrass Association (ETNBA) and Ijams Nature Center are partnering to bring folks together to create music in a beautiful space! Join the fun at a community jam session for all acoustic bluegrass instruments (no harmonicas or spoons at this time) every third Sunday from 2-5 pm (winter hours).

All skill levels are welcome. Pre-signup is requested to get an idea of how many people will participate. Jam sessions will be inside the Visitor Center during the winter months. Chairs will be set up and ready for you to enjoy the show!

Margherita Fava: TATATU / Bernell Jones Project

Set One: Italian pianist Margherita Fava and her quartet will present music from her debut album “TATATU.” The title is a reference to one of Fava’s first sentences as a child and roughly translates as “I can do it myself.” The project is self-produced from top to bottom and features a variety of original compositions and arrangements that reflect her unique perspective on the music.
Set Two: Saxophonist/keyboardist Bernell Jones II is a native of Memphis, TN. He graduated from the Jazz Studies program at UTK in 2020, and moved to New York City where he has quickly made a name for himself. Jones has performed with artists as diverse as singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill, rapper Wyclef Jean and trumpeter Philip Harper.
Bernell will present a set of his own music which represents a balance between the Big Apple’s fabled jazz presence and the sound of Memphis’ beloved soul music.

The mission of the NXT GEN series is to offer a platform for a younger generation of Knoxville-based musicians to produce and promote their own music, laying the foundation for the success of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra long into the future. NXT GEN is curated by pianists Sam Adams, Margherita Fava, Taber Gable and guitarist Jack Roben.

Learn how to find your Ancestors and hear what they shared through the generations with Dawn Arneach.

Dawn Arneach, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, works for the tribal newspaper, the Cherokee One Feather. She has been sharing Cherokee stories publicly since 2011. Dawn has had a lifelong interest in researching family trees, and she started working with Cherokee ancestry research in 2005. She will have some handouts about looking up your genealogy and a few books that you can access and ask questions about. She will share some traditional Cherokee stories that she grew up listening to her father share.

This free lecture will be held in the multipurpose room.

Spring is on the way… the Kids Go Green! Environmental Center and Gardens reopen this month.

On March 19 from 1-4 pm, visitors to the Museum will enjoy an open house of the Environmental Center and Gardens, Solar House, and Train Garden (weather permitting). Third Sunday visitors can also meet members of the Knoxville Area Model Railroaders and see their clubhouse. Members of the Amateur Radio Club of Oak Ridge will be on hand in the Discovery Lab with radio equipment that you can explore. You can also visit with members of the Knoxville Philatelic Society in the Craft and Science Room and learn about stamps. Third Sunday is free with admission.

Kolaj Magazine is a quarterly, printed, art magazine reviewing and surveying contemporary collage with an international perspective. ABOUT "MYTHICAL LANDSCAPE: SECRETS OF THE VALE"—
“The peaceful valley,” wrote William Wilson in 1904, “appears to have had a peculiar attraction for beings supernatural; and for generations its bosky glens and leafy braes have been the reputed haunt of ghosts, fairies, witches, and other beings of an uncanny kind. This sweet, pastoral vale in its nine miles course can boast of scenery unequaled in its quiet beauty, possessing in its woods and waters, its hazelly glens and green-clad hills, everything that can contribute to the making of the finest landscape, while to increase the charm it abounds in the most romantic tales of byegone days.” Sanquhar is a village on the River Nith, up from Dumfries, down from Glasgow, a former Royal Burgh, home to the world’s oldest working post office and the oldest curling society. The Crichton Family ruled the land from the time of Robert the Bruce until they threw such a lavish party for James VI and I in 1617 that they went bankrupt. A monument in town is dedicated to Covenanters who fought against government interference in religious affairs. A forge on Crawick Water made shovels and other tools. A carpet factory boasted fifty-four working looms at the height of production. Saint Bride’s Church, the Tolbooth, sheep grazing the fields, the castle ruins, rabbits in Queensberry Square. What stories does this mythical landscape hold? “Mythical Landscape: Secrets of the Vale” is an exhibition by an international group of artists, all of whom traveled to Sanquhar to investigate a sense of place and make artwork that speaks to the rich history and folklore of the region. Artworks reference stories from the past (true or otherwise) and consider the history of the region. Many of the works were shown at MERZ Gallery during Sanquhar’s Festival of Folklore, 22-25 September 2022. The artwork will be the subject of a film by David Rushton and used to illustrate a forthcoming, abridged version of William Wilson’s 1904 book, Folk Lore and Genealogies of Uppermost Nithsdale.

We are honored that the owners of these gardens have opened their property to the public as a part of our annual celebration of East Tennessee's natural beauty. Tours are self-guided; although Dogwood Arts staff & volunteers will be on-site for questions. A $5 donation per garden is suggested. Donations allow us to maintain and expand the Dogwood Trails & Gardens Program.

Savage Garden

Savage Garden was inspired by Arthur Savage’s visit to his native England. He then began building stone walls, ponds, arbors, and multiple follies. Savage became known as “the father of rock gardening in Knoxville.” The garden is quirky and eclectic, combining multiple themes. Although the main arbors and pagoda reflect a Japanese influence, the latter is topped with a “Dutch Girl” weather vane and there are two “Irish” water towers. After many years of extensive restoration, including rebuilding stone walls and borders, constructing faithful copies of the original arbors and gates, and planting thousands of trees, shrubs, and perennials, Savage Garden is once again the kind of magical place envisioned by Arthur Savage. Winter reveals the extensive bones, or structures, of Savage Garden and features thousands of snowdrops, daffodils, wood hyacinths, and other flowering bulbs. Savage Garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
