UT Arboretum Society: Ghost Birds

Category: Free event, Lecture, panel, Science, nature and Virtual

For the past 70 plus years the debate has raged. Is the Ivory-billed Woodpecker extinct? Does it still hang on somewhere hidden in the swamps of the South? Local naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales, author of "Ghost Birds," published by the University of Tennessee Press, claims they were here in the 1930’s, and he has excellent photographs to prove it.

The photos were taken by former UT zoology professor, the late James T. Tanner. In the 1930s, Tanner was a graduate student in ornithology at Cornell University and accompanied his mentor Arthur Allen on a long road trip across the country to find, photograph and record all birds but especially the ones labeled "vanishing."

Join the UT Arboretum Society via Zoom on Thursday, June 1st, 7pm EDT as Michelle Campanis, education coordinator at the University of Tennessee Arboretum, and Bales host the First Thursday Nature Supper Club presentation. You do not even have to put on your shoes and go to the deep swamps of the South.

The program is free, but registration is required to receive your Zoom link and the recording. Closed captions are available. Register at www.utarboretumsociety.org Please contact Michelle at mcampani@utk.edu for any questions or registration issues.
