Knoxville Museum of Art: Second Sunday Art Activity & Docent Tours

Bring your children in grades K-6 to the KMA for Second Sunday Art Activity Day. Children will do a hands-on art activity taught by a certified art teacher. FREE and open to the public! 1-4 PM
Join us for a Docent Guided Tour on the second Sunday of every month at 2pm! KMA visitors can follow a trained docent educator through the galleries to learn more about the KMA collection and temporary exhibitions. Tours are 60 minutes; visitors can meet at the front desk at 1:55pm to join the tour. FREE and open to the public!

Save the Date for Twilight at Ijams! Sunday, September 10, 5:30-8:30 pm.
Twilight at Ijams, presented by Clayton, is a fundraiser focused on all the things that make this nonprofit nature center special. From night hikers hearing a tiny owl calling and fireflies flitting through the forest, to a child and his grandmother seeing a turtle on the trails, to a camper catching and learning about tadpoles, Ijams is here because you believe nature is important.
Make plans to join your friends at a magical evening for a fabulous cause. You’ll enjoy fresh, delicious food, a signature cocktail, a silent auction, a wonderful performance from The Streamliners Swing Orchestra, dancing, and more!

Smoky Mountain Blues Society: Blues Cruise Featuring Tangled in Blue

The Smoky Mountain Blues Society will once again present live music with its continuation of our monthly River Cruises of 2023. This month's cruise performance will feature TANGLED IN BLUES on the Tennessee Riverboat on Sunday, September 10th at 4 pm – 7 pm. Boarding begins at 3:15 pm. 300 Neyland Dr, Knoxville, TN

Mark Twain’s beloved classic novel comes to life on stage in a fun-filled theatrical experience for young audiences. Follow the mischievous and a adventurous Tom Sawyer as he navigates boyhood and learns important life lessons of friendship, courage, and doing the right thing. With memorable characters like Huckleberry Finn, Becky Thatcher, and the villainous Injun Joe, this play is full of excitement, humor, and heart that will captivate, educate, and inspire children of all ages.

Sequoyah Birthplace Museum: Cherokee Fall Festival

The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, Tennessee’s only tribally owned museum, will host its 32nd annual Cherokee Fall Festival on September 9th & 10th, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day.
Visitors will have the opportunity to step back in time to experience Native American food, Cherokee arts and crafts demonstrations, music, and dance. In the museum we will be demonstrating our 1800’s Acorn Printing Press. A blacksmith will be doing on-site demonstrations in the shop both days. Other demonstrations and displays will include Cherokee life in 1700’s and a Civil War encampment doing living history demonstrations. There will be infantry, cannon and calvary demonstrations throughout the day.
Visitors will be able to meet and talk with Cherokees from the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina. Special entertainment will be provided by the Warrior Dancers of Ani-Kituhwa who are the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians official ambassadors. Check out our reconstructed 1800’s dog-trot log cabin. Also there will be Cherokee cooking demonstrations by Johnnie Sue Myers.
There will be free Cherokee name cards and kits available for children. Traditional Indian Fry bread and Indian tacos, and other food and drinks will be sold.
Tickets Adults are $10.00, children 13-18 years old are $5.00 and children 12 and under are free. Family rate for $25.00 (2 adults and 2 children 13-18) also available. For more information about the Festival, contact the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum at (423) 884-6246

The Maker City Summit

The Maker City Summit: Make Today. Impact Tomorrow.
Preparations for the eighth The Maker City Summit are underway, and the dates are out! The Maker Exchange will again be abuzz with Knoxville's most creative minds on September 8-10, 2023, and everyone is invited. With a history of creating an inspirational atmosphere with opportunities for networking and personal education, this event is designed to be entirely customizable to fit the needs of a new or seasoned creative entrepreneur.
Led by The Maker City Council co-chairs Jasmine Newton, Javon Renee Portraits, and Jonathan Clark, Carpetbag Theatre, the 2023 schedule is looking bold and inspiring.
Newton and Clark bring their own strengths to the lineup. As a photographer, Newton has a flare for the aesthetic and environmental impact of the Summit. She is focused on providing an area that fosters connection and growth. Her mantra is, "Make your mark, make connections, and make an impact."
Clark is a poet, writer, actor, and activist. He is motivational in the most approachable way. His goal is to ensure creatives are ready to take next steps for success. "I want to ensure that everyone from established entrepreneurs and business owners to Maker-Curious individuals knows that there is something for you, and the opportunity to chase your passion and make your own way is here waiting for you to take full advantage, so that you, too, can impact your tomorrow.
The schedule through The Summit will include speakers, break-out sessions, interviews, and intentional networking opportunities. The lineup will be released next week!
