Enhance your home garden with utterly unique fox-themed pieces by bidding in the online auction of our Fanciful Foxes exhibit! Around 80 works in total were created by local artists of all ages as part of our annual Art in the Gardens project. Bidding is open now and will close on Tuesday, October 3, at 5pm! Local amateur and professional artists donated their time and talent to artistically interpret this year’s theme with a fun and creative design. Teen/adult artists were given a large 3-D plywood fox to embellish using media of their choice. Again this year, we invited younger artists to participate by decorating either a fox head or a tree silhouette. Works have been on display throughout the Gardens for visitors to enjoy all summer. These unique art pieces will now be sold during this on-line auction with all proceeds benefiting the UT Gardens, Knoxville. This annual project was designed to promote community participation and foster artist collaboration as well as raise awareness and support for the Gardens. Our choice of a fox theme this year sought to bring a focus on urban wildlife and the need to protect them and their habitats from encroachment.

Winning bidders can pick up their item(s) during our Fall Plant Sale on Friday, October 6 (from 4-7 pm) or Saturday, October 7 (from 9 am - 2 pm). Payment can be made by credit card on Handbid or by cash or check at time of pickup.

The Knoxville Symphony’s exuberant Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series kicks off with vibrant orchestrations of art in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Adam Schoenberg’s GRAMMY-nominated Picture Studies, which has been described as a “21st-century Pictures at an Exhibition.” Arutiunian’s show-stopping Trumpet Concerto features the impeccable William Leathers whose trumpet solos have been noted for their “sparkling clarity.”

Goodwill Industries will hold its 13th Annual Goodwill Golf Classic tournament
featuring UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HEAD BASEBALL COACH TONY VITELLO on September 21st at Three Ridges Golf Course in Knoxville, named one of Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.”

Golfers can look forward to a fun day of golf to include 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and refreshments throughout the event. Tournament check in and lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Following golf, the event will conclude with an awards presentation with complimentary food. Golf foursomes are $550, single players are $150. The top three teams will be awarded prizes and there will be a $10,000 Hole-In-One Cash Contest along with other contest opportunities.

Goodwill Industries is a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to changing lives and strengthening families by helping people reach their full potential through community-relevant job training, work experiences, and career services. Proceeds from the event will support our mission.

Jane Cassidy (b. Galway, Ireland, 1984) is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator living in Galway City on the west coast of Ireland. Cassidy’s main interests lie in immersive audiovisual environments, multi-sensory work, and synesthesia, most often used to interpret the mysticism of nature. Her exhibition Drink Up the Moon celebrates how life can be better lived when we are in tune with the world around us. www.janecassidy.net

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is pleased to announce the guests for the September installment of our reading series, poets Liz Chang and Maya Williams. Join us on Thursday, September 21st at Pretentious Beer Co. from 7:00-9:00 PM for a reading followed by an open mic hosted by Shlagha Borah. Sign-up for the open mic begins at 7PM sharp and is limited to 10-12 readers.

Liz Chang’s poetry has recently appeared in Verse Daily, Schuylkill Valley Journal, Rock & Sling, Exit 7, Breakwater Review and Stoneboat Literary Journal, among others. Chang was 2012 Montgomery County Poet Laureate and her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her fourth published collection, Museum of Things, is available now from Finishing Line Press. Chang’s translation of Claude de Burine’s poetry is anthologized in Paris in Our View from l’Association des Amis de Shakespeare & Company. She is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Moravian University.

Maya Williams (ey/they/she) is a Black multiracial nonbinary suicide survivor who is currently the poet laureate of Portland, Maine. Eir debut collection Judas & Suicide was released in May 2023 by Game Over Books; eir second collection Refused a Second Date will be released in October 2023 by Harbor Editions. Judas & Suicide was selected as a finalist for the New England Book Award in July 2023. Maya was one of three artists of color selected to represent Maine in The Kennedy Center's Arts Across America series in 2020. AGTV Member Lil Clinard began to pursue art and painting full time after her 30-year career in research and technical management. Upon retirement, she took art classes and workshops and began to paint in earnest, teaching herself through practice. Attracted to the elusive quality of light and the wonderful colors that emerge, she began to try different media, surfaces, and techniques. Lil discovered that while fear will hold you back, trying new things can create great results and be a lot of fun!

In 2008, Lil began to exhibit and was encouraged by awards and sales of her artwork. Today, she considers herself a professional artist who paints realistically with a nod to impressionism. Her work is available through her website, her studio, and the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is active in several art organizations including the National Watercolor Society and American Watercolor Society and is current president of the Tennessee Watercolor Society.

Family festivals, musical performances and guest speakers are among the events Pellissippi State Community College has planned for Hispanic Heritage Month – and all are free and open to the public. Themed “Todos Somos Familia” (We Are All Family), Hispanic Heritage Month at the college will celebrate the rich and beautiful complexity of Latino and Hispanic culture at Pellissippi State as well as recognize the importance of the contributions of Latino and Hispanic culture to the local community and the world.

Keynote speakers Karen Ocon-Mora, community schools site coordinator for Knox County, and Megan Barolet-Fogarty, director of youth and family engagement for Centro Hispano de East Tennessee, will kick off the month’s festivities Tuesday, Sept. 19, with an address on “Familia: Relationships and Resilience in Latino Culture.” The event will be held 10:30-11:15 a.m. in the Goins Building Auditorium on Pellissippi State’s Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, and livestreamed on Zoom.

Families have two opportunities to come out to Pellissippi State for festivals including games, activities, food and a screening of the film “Encanto” at sunset: 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, on the college’s Hardin Valley Campus and again 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, on Pellissippi State’s Strawberry Plains Campus, 7201 Strawberry Plains Pike

And don’t miss a lively performance by Knoxville’s own Latin jazz band Candela on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the Hardin Valley Campus Courtyard. Candela will play 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., and refreshments will be served.
