Museum of Appalachia: Sheep Shearing Days
Category: Festivals, special events, History, heritage and Kids, family
The Museum of Appalachia will welcome the warmth and renewal of spring by trimming the winter’s heavy growth of wool from their flock of sheep. Visitors are invited to join the museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, in celebration of this beloved pioneer tradition on April 26, May 3, and May 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Sheep Shearing Days will include demonstrations of shearing, herding, carding, spinning, and weaving the fleece into woven goods, plus many real-life examples of some of the many finished products derived from the freshly shorn wool. Family-friendly activities will also include live Appalachian music and historic demonstrations of quilting, soap making, rug hooking, pottery, beekeeping, blacksmithing, and much more.
Admission includes a tour of the Museum, which contains some three-dozen historic log structures, exhibit halls filled with thousands of Appalachian artifacts, working gardens, and farm animals.
Tickets are available for purchase at museumofappalachia.org. Admission rates for this event are $10 for both adults and children. The event is free for Museum members.

Jubilee Community Arts: Sparky and Rhonda Rucker
Category: Music
Presenting traditional African-American blues and folk repertoires from Civil War days to the present. Banjoist, guitarist and storyteller Sparky Rucker is joined by Rhonda Rucker on blues harp, piano and guitar.
Sparky and Rhonda Rucker perform throughout the U.S. as well as overseas, singing songs and telling stories from the American folk tradition. Sparky Rucker has been performing over fifty years and is internationally recognized as a leading folklorist, musician, historian, storyteller, and author. He accompanies himself with fingerstyle picking and bottleneck blues guitar, banjo, and spoons. Rhonda Rucker is a musician, children's author, storyteller, and songwriter. Her blues-style harmonica, piano, old-time banjo, and bones add musical versatility to their performances.
Over fifty years of performing, Sparky and Rhonda have appeared at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival as well as NPR's On Point, Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, and Morning Edition. Their recording, Treasures & Tears, was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award, and their music is also included on the Grammy-nominated anthology, Singing Through the Hard Times.
Sparky and Rhonda weave their music into captivating stories that the history books don’t always tell. Their educational programs span over three centuries of African-American history, including slavery, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, the birth of blues music, and the civil rights movement. Each era is interspersed with stories and popular songs from the time period, celebrating the diversity of the nation's history.
