September 6th @ Mabry-Hazen House: The Mummy (1999) presented by Borderland Tees
The Mummy is a rousing, suspenseful, and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb, the hunters unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old legacy of terror, which is embodied in the vengeful reincarnation of an Egyptian priest who had been sentenced to an eternity as one of the living dead. Awaken Coffee: A Better Place by Ame Houston

  • September 6, 2024

Category: Culinary arts, food, Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Friday, Sept 6, from 6-8 Awaken Coffee will host an opening reception for Ame Houston

"In 'A Better Place,' I explore a realm between reality and imagination using bold colors and idealized landscapes. For each piece, I selected a limited palette - aiming to evoke emotions and bring viewers to a serene and dreamier place. These places occupy a space between real geographical locations and a fleeting daydream. The inspiration for this series comes from the need for escape during the mundane moments of the day. These paintings were created as a sort of mental sanctuary, a landscape for the mind to inhabit when it needs an escape from the grind of life." – Ame Houston

Please join us for some amazing art, light refreshments, and of course great coffee!

Awaken Coffee, 125 W Jackson Ave, Knoxville, TN 37902. Open daily. Information: 865-951-0427, www.instagram.com/awaken_coffee or www.facebook.com/awakencoffeeoldcity/

A conversation with Rae Garringer about their upcoming book and oral history project, Country Queers.

About the Event
Despite what typical media may have you think, queer people have always been present in rural areas across the US. In 2013, Rae Garringer embarked on the Country Queers oral history project to find and elevate those stories. Part photo book, part memoir, part oral history project, Country Queers paints a vivid portrait of queer and trans experiences in rural areas and small towns across the US, with a special feature of Knoxville's own Elandria Williams. During this event you will be able to pre-order a signed copy of the book ahead of its release on October 8.
