The Wild Thyme Players and Nashville Stagecraft: The Pop-up Theatre Project

A local theatre company will host performing artists from Nashville for a special weekend to kick start a new project that will change the way Knoxville experiences theatre. The Wild Thyme Players will sponsor Nashville Stagecraft for a special seminar and workshop to introduce the Pop-Up Theatre Project. Pop-up theatre veterans from the Nashville group will show workshop attendees how to perform spontaneous short plays and monologues in public spaces around Knoxville.

A seminar on pop-up theatre theory and practice will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 19 at the Broadway Academy of Performing Arts (BAPA), 706 N Broadway. A workshop on pop-up theatre preparation will take place later that evening at 6:00 PM at BAPA. The combined seminar and workshop fee is $25, or $20 for students/seniors/military members with ID.

Free Pop-Up Theatre Project performances will take place on Saturday, October 19 at 11:00 AM at Sequoyah Park, and again Sunday, October 20 at 12:00 PM on Market Square. The public is invited to attend.

Tennessee Theatre: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

While driving home during a rain filled night straight-laced, newly-engaged lovebirds Brad and Janet, by chance, end up at the castle of one Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his strange and bizarre entourage to find that he's having a party. This is no ordinary party and no ordinary night. This is the unveiling of the Dr's latest creation: Rocky; A man-made Adonis that will give...absolute pleasure. This is an exceedingly grand visual and musical camp satire of the golden days of the B-movie horror and science-fiction genres. Projected along with a musical soundtrack to give "audience participation" a new meaning. ****Come dressed to impress as your favorite Rocky Horror character and you could win door prizes from 10-11 p.m. The bar will offer thematic drink specials, and Willemina Snyder will kick off the stage show with the Mighty Wurlitzer at 11 p.m. The movie begins at 11:15pm, complete with a live shadow cast, leading fans in audience participation. PLEASE NOTE: While we encourage everyone to bring props and have a fabulous time, certain items will not be allowed. APPROVED props are as follows: newspapers, water pistols (no larger than the palm of your hand), flashlights, rubber gloves, noisemakers, toilet paper, neoprene toast, party hat, bell, cards, hot dogs - neoprene only, prunes - neoprene only. The following items will NOT be approved: rice, candles, confetti, glitter, real food items such as toast, hot dogs, and prunes. Please respect our historic theater and refrain from throwing anything at the screen.

Theatre Knoxville Downtown: Deathtrap

Deathtrap by Ira Levin is one of the popular successes of recent Broadway history. The play offers a rare and skillful blending of two priceless theatrical ingredients—gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter. Playwright Ira Levin snares the audience with the devious machinations of a writer of thrillers, Sydney Bruhl, whose recent offerings have been flops, and who is prepared to go to any lengths to improve his fortunes. Directed by Margy Ragsdale, the cast includes, John Cherry as the devious Bruhl, Lisa Blair, Eileen Conway, Darin Starr and Chuck Denny. Time Magazine said “ "If you care to assassinate yourself with laughter, try DEATHTRAP.”

Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 plus fees for Thursday & Sunday performances and $15 plus fees for Friday & Saturday performances. If available, tickets will be sold at the door.

Come and join the spirits for a tour of Downtown Knoxville’s scariest landmarks. The tours which last approximately one and a half hours each, will visit the sites of some of Knoxville’s best kept secrets. Stories for this year include: the legend of Knoxville’s own Frankenstein, The Haunted Church Organ & Hanging Abner Baker. All tours began and end at James White’s Fort located at the intersection of Hill Avenue and Hall of Fame Drive. Ample free parking is available for tour participants at the Fort. Tours will depart at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Each tour will end with a marshmallow roast around the fires at the Fort.

A Provocative and Gripping Story
The WordPlayers will present the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play Doubt, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley. This brilliant and powerful drama features Carol Mayo Jenkins, veteran of Broadway, Off-Broadway, numerous regional theatres and star of TV’s Fame. Ms. Jenkins plays Sister Aloysius, a Catholic school principal, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn (Rollin Prince) of improper relations with one of the male students. Lar’Juanette Williams plays Mrs. Muller and Rachel Norman enacts Sister James. This thought-provoking drama confronts issues of hierarchical power, uncertainties and doubt. Recommended for ages 15+ Optional Post-show Discussion will follow each performance.

Mabry-Hazen House: Evelyn Hazen Celebration

The Mabry-Hazen House invites you to Miss Evelyn Hazen’s Birthday Celebration. Each year we explore another part of Miss Hazen’s family history. Join us for a presentation and book signing by Curator of Civil War History, Dr. Joan Markel, of her book Knoxville in the Civil War from the Images of America series. Visitors will enjoy a selection of birthday cakes, as well as a guided tour of the museum. Tickets costs are $10 per person with no cost to members. The purchase of a Membership is encouraged.

Dr. Joan L. Markel, the Civil War curator at the University of Tennessee’s McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, has spent the last 20 years studying the history of her adopted home and bringing the story to audiences young and old throughout the community. She earned a doctorate in anthropology at the University at Buffalo and an MLS at Indiana University. Built in 1858, The Mabry-Hazen House is strategically located on the highest hill east of downtown Knoxville with spacious views in all directions. The home was occupied and defended by both armies during the Civil War. It housed three generations of the same family for 130 years; the museum showcases one of the largest original family collections in America. Your attendance will help support the museum's mission to preserve and educate the public about an important part of East Tennessee history.

Orchestra at Maryville College Fall Concert

The Orchestra at Maryville College, under the direction of Maestro Bill Robinson, will present a fall concert featuring music by Maryville native Jennifer Higdon. Mark Harrell of Knoxville will provide an orchestration of the “Horn Sonata” by a former MC professor, the late Victor Schoen.

Appalachian Arts Craft Center: Jurying for New Members

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris is looking for new members to sell their handmade crafts in the Craft Center shop. Anyone interested in going through the jurying process should pick up a jurying packet at the center and then bring three samples of their work to the center between Monday, October 21 and Friday, November 1 at noon. The jurying will take place on Monday, November 4, and items must be picked up by Thursday, November 12. Each person going through the process must fill out a form and pay a nonrefundable $25 jurying fee. The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for over 40 years.
