The Athens Community Theater will present their spring comedy, Duck Hunter Shoots Angel by Mitch Albom in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center on April 19-28, 2012. It is directed by veteran ACT actor, Dave Siklosi.

DUCK HUNTER SHOOTS ANGEL is the uproarious story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who have never shot a duck but think they shot an angel. As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer, who don’t believe any of it – until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered along the way. The play hysterically interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp. Ultimately a sweet allegory about redemption, DUCK HUNTER SHOOTS ANGEL has been hailed by audiences as a rare comedy with a surprisingly heartfelt lesson.

Duck Hunter Shoots Angel opens with dinner theater by reservation only on Thursday, April 19th for $25 per person. The evening features a full meal and cash bar, beginning at 6:00 PM with show time at 7:30 PM. Other evening performances at 7:30 PM are April 20,21,26,27,28 and a Sunday matinee is offered on April 22 at 2PM. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. Duck hunters with permits will be admitted for half price on Thursday, April 26. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will perform the next installment of the Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series on Thursday and Friday, April 19 & 20 at 8:00 PM at the Tennessee Theatre. The orchestra will present a concert featuring the music of Saint-Saëns and Schubert. The concert will open Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished.” Next, violinist David Kim will perform Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 3 for Violin. The orchestra will then perform Schubert’s Overture, D. 590 in D Major. To conclude the concert Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky will narrate as the orchestra performs Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. The concerts will be preceded by a pre-concert chat taking place on the stage of the Tennessee Theatre beginning at 7:00 PM.

In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work, and to defend their work during an oral examination in front of a faculty committee. Due to the number of graduate students enrolled in the UT Department of Art, these exhibitions generally take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the gallery space.

“Bursting with Spring” is the title for the annual spring art show at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC). The show will be bursting with outstanding original art created by the members of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade. Art Guild members will exhibit some of their best artwork, hoping to win one of the show’s coveted award ribbons. One ribbon will be awarded for each of the following six categories: landscape, people and animals, floral and still life, abstract, 3¬–D, and showcase item.
Those who attend the Bursting with Spring show will enjoy the opportunity to both view and judge, choosing their favorite entry in each award category. Ribbons will be awarded according to popular vote.
Voting will begin during the show’s opening reception on Friday, April 13, from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Both Art Guild members and the general public are invited to attend the reception. Voting will continue through Thursday, April 26. Ribbons will be placed next to the winning entries on Friday, April 27 and will remain until the show’s closing on Friday, May 4.

Terra Madre, a local group of women clay artists, announces their upcoming exhibition
“Flora and Fauna” to be held at Blount Mansion April 13-28. The opening reception for
the exhibit will be Friday, April 13 from 5-7pm. This exhibit will feature the handmade
pottery and clay work of over 20 members of the group. Terra Madre is an eclectic group of female clay artists with diverse approaches to clay. Functional, sculptural, traditional, contemporary and whimsical works of clay art relating to the flora and fauna theme will be included in the exhibit and many of the pieces will be available for purchase.

Red Line Gallery will be hosting an Artist Reception & Exhibition featuring works by Atlanta-based artist, Charles Keiger, entitled “Menagerie”.

The word "menagerie" was the trigger for the imagery in Charles Keiger's latest paintings. The concept of a circus has always been intriguing; wild animals, acrobats and clowns all coexisting in an isolated environment, complete with an audience. In some ways this concept is similar to a painting; Take raw materials (skillfully manipulated), confine them to a designated space and defy the laws of nature. The rules of the world do not apply to what happens on a stage or a picture plane. You are shown an alternate reality and maybe, just for an instant, the viewer, through their imagination, is a mental participant in the impossible.

The Artist Reception will be held on Saturday, April 7th from 7-9pm & the show will hang through the end of April.

Art in Public Places Knoxville is a monumental installation of large-scale outdoor sculptures by regionally and nationally acclaimed artists. The sculptures enliven downtown Knoxville as well as McGhee Tyson Airport. Awards for the Art in Public Places exhibition will be presented by world-acclaimed sculptor, Allen Peterson. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Nouveau Classics on 128 South Gay Street on April 6.
