Marble Springs and Crescent Bend are participating May 26, with Marble Springs hosting a 2-day event (Saturday and Sunday, May 26-27). Blount Mansion, James White's Fort, Mabry-Hazen House and Ramsey House are June 2.

Some of East Tennessee’s most important cultural heritage sites, including those that comprise Historic Homes of Knoxville, are partnering to celebrate Statehood Day on Saturdays, May 26 and June 2. All of the sites are historically significant in Tennessee’s becoming the 16th state in 1796. Each individual site will celebrate the birth of Tennessee by offering free tours to the public in addition to special events.

In conjunction with the Historic Homes of Knoxville--June 1, 2012 marks the 216th anniversary of Tennessee’s admission as the 16th state in the year 1796. Marble Springs State Historic Site will commemorate this occasion with a weekend of Living History demonstrations. Saturday, May 26 from 10am-5pm walk amongst Living History interpreters in 18th Century clothing portraying life on the frontier, including open-hearth cooking demonstrations. Militia drills will take place, along with demonstrations of 18th--Century life. The celebration will continue into Sunday, May 27 from 12-5pm with Living History encampments and various interpreters. This event is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra will perform Picnic in the Park on Saturday, May 26, 7:30 p.m. in Maryville's Greenbelt Theater in the Park.

James Fellenbaum, KSO Resident Conductor, will conduct the concert. The performance is free, family-friendly and open to the public. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early and bring a picnic dinner, blankets and/or chairs.

The orchestra will perform pop and light classical favorites including selections from Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, Rossini’s Overture to The Italian in Algiers, Bernstein’s West Side Story, Gershwin’s Summertime, Berlin’s A Symphonic Portrait and Sousa’s Washington Post March among others.

Two years ago some of the world’s most celebrated combat photographers decided to pool their work for “Conflict Zone,” a collection of images from the front lines of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pellissippi State Community College hosts this acclaimed exhibit May 23-31 in recognition of Memorial Day, which is May 28. The photographs will be on display in the Bagwell Center for Media and Art gallery, and there is no charge.

“Conflict Zone” is a project of the Independence Fund, founded by Steve Danyluk, a U.S. combat veteran and Marine. The all-volunteer Independence Fund is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “provide the tools, therapies and guidance that those severely injured in the War on Terror were otherwise not receiving.” The exhibit first opened at the Chicago Cultural Center on May 7, 2011.

“Conflict Zone” was inspired by Joao Silva, a New York Times photographer who lost both legs after stepping on a land mine in October 2010 in Afghanistan. The images he took in the seconds after stepping on the mine are included in the collection.

The Bagwell Center is on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. Exhibit hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays or by appointment.
